Koh Samui vs Phuket: Which Thai Island Should You Choose?
Koh Samui and Phuket are Thailand’s two most popular island destinations. They attract similar visitor profiles but offer noticeably different experiences. The right choice depends on when you’re travelling, what you want from a beach holiday, and how much you value convenience versus atmosphere.
Location and Access
Phuket: On the Andaman Sea (west coast of Thailand). Phuket International Airport (HKT) has direct flights from Europe, the Middle East, Australia, and across Asia. Large island — 543 km². Connected to the mainland by the Sarasin Bridge, so technically accessible by road.
Koh Samui: In the Gulf of Thailand (east coast). Koh Samui Airport (USM) has flights from Bangkok (1 hour) and some international routes (Singapore, Hong Kong, Kuala Lumpur). Smaller island — 228 km². Accessible only by air or ferry.
Verdict on access: Phuket is significantly easier to reach from outside Thailand. Koh Samui’s airport is operated by Bangkok Airways, which limits competition and keeps flight prices higher. If flying in from Europe or Australia, Phuket has far more direct options.
Beaches
Phuket highlights: Nai Harn (south, quieter, good for swimming), Kata Noi (small, clear water), Freedom Beach (hike in or boat, worth the effort), Bang Tao (north, upscale resort strip), Surin (upscale, good dining nearby). The Andaman Sea side produces excellent water clarity — visibility of 10–20 metres on good days.
Koh Samui highlights: Lamai Beach (locals’ favourite, good mix of facilities and space), Maenam (north coast, quiet, budget-friendly), Bophut (Fisherman’s Village area, relaxed atmosphere with boutique hotels), Silver Beach (small, sheltered, clear water).
Note: Patong Beach in Phuket is the most developed and crowded — excellent for nightlife, not for those seeking a peaceful beach. Chaweng in Koh Samui is the equivalent — the longest beach strip with the most bars, restaurants, and hotels.
Verdict on beaches: Phuket has more variety and slightly better water clarity on average. Koh Samui’s beaches are calmer (Gulf waters are generally less choppy than the Andaman) and feel less commercial outside of Chaweng.
Accommodation
Phuket price ranges as of 2026:
- Budget guesthouses: from approximately ฿500–800 per night
- Mid-range hotels (pool, breakfast): approximately ฿1,500–3,000
- Luxury resorts (Banyan Tree, Trisara, Amanpuri): approximately ฿8,000–50,000+
Koh Samui price ranges as of 2026:
- Budget guesthouses: from approximately ฿400–700 per night
- Mid-range hotels (pool, breakfast): approximately ฿1,200–2,500
- Luxury resorts (Four Seasons, Belmond Napasai, W Koh Samui): approximately ฿7,000–40,000+
Both islands cover the full spectrum. Koh Samui tends to be 10–20% cheaper at comparable quality levels, partly because of less international demand.
Nightlife
Phuket: More extensive. Patong’s Bangla Road is Thailand’s most concentrated nightlife strip — bars, clubs, and cabaret shows running until 2–3am. Phuket also has a growing upscale bar scene, beach clubs (Catch Beach Club at Bang Tao, Café del Mar at Kamala), and rooftop bars. Outside of Patong, Kata and Karon have quieter bar scenes.
Koh Samui: Good but lower-key. Chaweng has clubs (Ark Bar, Green Mango) and bars along the beach road. The Full Moon Party on neighbouring Koh Phangan (30 minutes by speedboat) draws the party crowd. Fisherman’s Village in Bophut has a more sophisticated cocktail bar scene. The overall atmosphere is calmer than Patong.
Verdict: If nightlife is a priority, Phuket (specifically Patong) has more range and intensity. For a relaxed evening drink scene, both are fine.
Activities and Day Trips
Phuket advantages: Koh Phi Phi day trips (70 km by speedboat, approximately ฿1,500–2,500 per person), James Bond Island, Phang Nga Bay kayaking tours (approximately ฿1,200–2,000), excellent scuba diving at the Similan Islands (liveaboard trips from approximately ฿5,000 for a day trip), Phuket Old Town (Sino-Portuguese architecture, Sunday Walking Street market). Elephant sanctuaries (Phuket Elephant Sanctuary — approximately ฿2,500 half-day).
Koh Samui advantages: Koh Phangan day trips or overnight (Full Moon Party, Bottle Beach, Thong Nai Pan — ferry approximately ฿200–400), Koh Tao (world-class dive site, 2 hours by catamaran — open water certification from approximately ฿9,000), Ang Thong Marine Park kayaking and snorkelling tours (approximately ฿1,500–2,500 per person), Namuang waterfalls (free, on the island).
Verdict: Both have excellent day-trip options. Phuket’s Phang Nga Bay and Phi Phi are more dramatic. Koh Samui’s access to Koh Tao diving and Ang Thong is equally compelling. The choice depends on your interests.
Food
Phuket: Phuket Town has a strong local food scene — Hokkien-influenced dishes like mee Hokkien (yellow noodles), oh tao (oyster omelette), and Phuket-style curries. The Old Town area has several well-regarded local restaurants: Raya (Thai-Chinese, mains approximately ฿120–250) and Lock Tien (street food, dishes from approximately ฿50). The beach areas have more international options but less character.
Koh Samui: The island’s food scene is more tourist-oriented, though Fisherman’s Village in Bophut has some good seafood restaurants (Starfish & Coffee, mains approximately ฿200–350). The Friday night market at Fisherman’s Village is the best single food event on the island. Lamai has cheaper local Thai restaurants with mains from approximately ฿80–150.
Verdict: Phuket Town has the stronger local food culture. Koh Samui’s dining is more resort-focused.
When to Go
| Month | Phuket (Andaman) | Koh Samui (Gulf) |
|---|---|---|
| January–April | Dry, excellent | Dry, excellent |
| May–October | Monsoon (rainy) | Dry (Gulf season) |
| November | Dry, peak season | Rainy |
| December | Dry, peak season | Improving |
This is the critical decision factor for many travellers. If visiting in October–November, Phuket is excellent; Koh Samui is rainy. If visiting in June–August, Koh Samui is in its dry season while Phuket is rainy (though Phuket’s monsoon brings afternoon storms rather than all-day rain — mornings are often clear).
Peak season pricing: Both islands charge premium rates from December to March. Phuket’s peak pricing is more extreme — expect 50–100% increases at popular hotels. Koh Samui’s increases are typically 30–60%.

Verdict
Choose Phuket if: You want more activities, more nightlife options, easy international flights, a stronger local food scene, or you’re travelling between November and April.
Choose Koh Samui if: You want a quieter, more intimate island experience, proximity to Koh Phangan and Koh Tao, slightly lower prices, or you’re travelling between May and September (Gulf dry season).
If you have 2+ weeks: Consider both. A common route is to fly into Phuket, spend 4–5 days, fly or bus to Surat Thani, ferry to Koh Samui for 3–4 days, then ferry to Koh Phangan or Koh Tao before returning to Bangkok.
