Overview

This itinerary runs 14 nights across three areas: Bangkok, Chiang Mai, and Krabi with island day trips. It’s designed for first-time visitors who want a representative cross-section of Thailand — city, culture, mountains, and coast. It’s manageable without rushing and leaves room for flexibility.

Total transport: Bangkok (fly in) → Chiang Mai (overnight train or 1h20m flight) → fly to Krabi → fly home from Krabi.

Days 1–3: Bangkok

Day 1 — Arrive, settle, and recover from the journey. Check in to your hotel (Rattanakosin or Sukhumvit depending on budget). Evening: walk Chinatown (Yaowarat Road) for dinner — T&K Seafood (grilled prawns from approximately THB 200) or street food from the open-fronted stalls.

Day 2 — Grand Palace and Wat Pho. Arrive at the Grand Palace by 08:30 before coach tours arrive (฿500 entrance). Walk through Wat Phra Kaew and the palace grounds (2.5 hours). Cross to Wat Pho (฿200) for the Reclining Buddha. Lunch near Pak Klong Talat. Afternoon: take the pedestrian ferry across to Wat Arun (฿100) for sunset views from the temple steps. Evening: Err Urban Rustic Thai (Maharat Road, mains from THB 180–320) or rooftop drinks at Octave (Marriott Sukhumvit 57, from THB 350).

Day 3 — Chatuchak Weekend Market if it’s a Saturday or Sunday (BTS Mo Chit). Otherwise: canal boat tour on Khlong Bangkok Noi (longtail from Tha Chang pier, ฿1,000–1,500 per boat). Afternoon at Lumphini Park. Evening: rooftop bar for the skyline view.

Day 9 — Railay Beach full day. Take the longtail from Ao Nang (฿150 per person, 15 minutes). Explore all four Railay beaches — Railay West, Phra Nang Cave Beach (the highlight), and Ton Sai. For a rough daily breakdown: backpacker budget (hostels, street food) is achievable at THB 1,200–1,800/day. Mid-range sits at THB 5,000–8,500/day. The elephant sanctuary (THB 2,800), Phi Phi day trip (THB 1,500–2,200), and any PADI diving are the major single-day costs.

Practical Tips

  • Overnight train booking: Book at least a week ahead at the State Railway of Thailand website (dticket.railway.co.th). Sleeper berths sell out quickly between Bangkok and Chiang Mai during peak season (December–February).
  • Krabi transfers: Ao Nang is the beach base; Krabi Town is the transport hub. Minivans between them run frequently (30 minutes, THB 100). Krabi Airport is 20km east of town (THB 200 by shared taxi).
  • Scooter safety: Wear a helmet at all times. Island roads have steep hills, sand patches, and stray dogs. Travel insurance should specifically cover motorcycle use if you plan to ride.
  • Koh Tao diving: If you plan to get PADI certified, allow 3–4 days. Open Water courses start from approximately THB 9,800 including accommodation — one of the most affordable certification spots in the world.

Variations

Add Ayutthaya: Insert a day trip from Bangkok on Day 3. Train from Bang Sue Grand Station to Ayutthaya — approximately 1.5 hours, THB 20 (third class) or THB 245 (second-class air-conditioned) as of 2026. Highlights: Wat Mahathat (entry THB 50), Wat Phra Si Sanphet (THB 50), Wat Chaiwatthanaram (THB 50). Rent a bicycle at the station (THB 50/day). Return to Bangkok in the late afternoon and board the overnight train to Chiang Mai.

Add Koh Tao: Instead of Krabi, fly to Surat Thani and take the ferry to Koh Samui (2–3 hours, from THB 400), then continue to Koh Tao. Best if diving is a priority — 3–4 days allows an Open Water course. If staying the Gulf island chain (Samui → Koh Phangan → Koh Tao), Lomprayah catamaran connects the three islands with departures throughout the day.

Add Pai: From Chiang Mai, a 3-hour minivan to Pai (฿150, 762 curves) and 2 nights in the mountain valley adds a very different experience. Cut one day from Chiang Mai. Highlights on scooter (from THB 150/day): Pai Canyon (free), Tha Pai Hot Springs (THB 200), Pai Walking Street (nightly from 17:00).

Extend south: If you have 3 weeks, add Koh Phangan (Full Moon Party or yoga retreat) between Koh Samui and Koh Tao, or extend the Krabi section with a stay on Koh Lanta.

Add Chiang Rai: Extend the northern leg by 1 night. Bus or minivan from Chiang Mai to Chiang Rai (3 hours, THB 140–200). Must-see: White Temple (Wat Rong Khun, free entry — arrive before 09:00) and Black House / Baan Dam Museum (THB 80). Optional: Golden Triangle viewpoint (65km northeast, driver hire THB 800–1,200 return).

Frequently Asked Questions

Is two weeks enough for Thailand?
Two weeks is enough to cover three distinct areas well: Bangkok, the north (Chiang Mai and surroundings), and one southern beach destination. It's not enough to cover both coasts plus the north in any depth. Prioritise based on interests: if diving is the goal, go to Koh Tao; if beaches with easy access are the goal, Phuket or Krabi; if islands and nightlife, the Samui–Phangan–Tao chain.
What is the best route for first-time visitors to Thailand?
Bangkok (3 nights) → Chiang Mai (3–4 nights) → southern island destination (5–7 nights). This route gives exposure to urban Bangkok, cultural northern Thailand, and a beach finale. It also follows efficient flight routing — Bangkok is the entry point for most international arrivals, and flights from Chiang Mai to Phuket or Krabi are direct and cheap.
How much does 2 weeks in Thailand cost?
Budget travellers can manage approximately THB 35,000–50,000 (USD 1,015–1,450) for 14 days including all transport, accommodation, food, and activities. Mid-range travellers spending THB 70,000–120,000 (USD 2,030–3,475) get comfortable hotels and guided tours. These are estimates as of 2026.
What is the best month for a 2-week Thailand trip?
December through February is ideal for the entire north-to-south route. The north is cool (15–28°C), Bangkok is dry, and the Gulf islands have calm seas. Avoid October–November for the Gulf coast (monsoon) and March–April for the north (burning season, poor air quality).
