Bangkok to Koh Samui: How to Get There
Koh Samui is in the Gulf of Thailand, about 650 km south of Bangkok. See our Koh Samui island guide for beaches, accommodation, and the best time to visit. There are three main ways to get there, each with different trade-offs on cost, comfort, and journey time.
Option 1: Fly Direct (Fastest)
Bangkok to Koh Samui Airport (USM): Bangkok Airways operates direct flights from Suvarnabhumi (BKK). Flight time: approximately 1 hour. Multiple flights daily — typically 6–8 departures depending on season.
Cost: Approximately 1,500–4,000 THB one way depending on booking window and demand as of 2026. Bangkok Airways has a near-monopoly on this route, which keeps prices higher than comparable domestic flights. Booking 3–4 weeks ahead typically secures the lower end of the range.
Koh Samui Airport is privately owned by Bangkok Airways and is one of the more pleasant small airports in Southeast Asia — open-air terminal buildings with thatched roofs, short walks between gates. Taxis and hotel shuttles are available from the terminal. A taxi to Chaweng Beach costs approximately ฿300–400, to Lamai approximately ฿400–500.
Pros: Fast (3–4 hours door to door), comfortable, no sea crossing involved. The only option that works for short trips or tight schedules.
Cons: More expensive than overland options. Bangkok Airways monopolises the route and prices reflect it — there is no budget airline alternative for direct flights.
Alternative: Fly to Surat Thani + Ferry. AirAsia and Nok Air fly from Don Mueang (DMK) to Surat Thani Airport (approximately 1 hour, from ฿500–1,200 one way). A connecting bus and ferry to Koh Samui adds approximately 2.5–3 hours. Total door-to-door: 5–6 hours. Combined tickets (flight + bus + ferry) are available through the airline websites from approximately ฿1,000–1,800 total. This is significantly cheaper than the Bangkok Airways direct flight and worth considering if budget matters more than time.
Book at: bangkokair.com for direct flights, airasia.com or nokair.com for the Surat Thani route, or comparison sites like Aviasales and Skyscanner.
Option 2: Train to Surat Thani + Ferry
Bangkok Hua Lamphong to Surat Thani train: Overnight sleeper trains depart in the evening (typically 5pm–7:30pm depending on service) and arrive early the following morning. Journey time: 8–10 hours.
Cost breakdown as of 2026:
- Third class (seated, fan): approximately ฿200
- Second class sleeper, upper berth: approximately ฿650
- Second class sleeper, lower berth: approximately ฿750
- First class sleeper (private cabin, 2 berths): approximately ฿1,400–1,800
Second-class lower berth is the best value comfort option — wider berth, at window height, with a curtain for privacy. Upper berths are narrower and warmer. Both include sheets and a pillow.
Surat Thani to Koh Samui ferry: From Donsak pier (about 1 hour from Surat Thani station by connecting bus). Ferry operators include Raja Ferry and Seatran Discovery. Crossing time: approximately 1.5–2 hours. Tickets approximately 150–250 THB as of 2026.
Connecting logistics: Combined train+bus+ferry tickets include the Surat Thani station-to-pier transfer and are sold at major Bangkok train stations. Without a combined ticket, you take a local bus or shared minivan from Surat Thani train station to Donsak pier — approximately ฿100, running roughly hourly from 6am.
Total journey time: 11–13 hours (evening departure, morning arrival on Koh Samui).
Best for: Budget travellers, those who enjoy the train experience, or night travellers who want to sleep through the journey. The overnight sleeper is a genuine experience in its own right — dinner from the onboard food cart, views of the countryside at dawn, and arrival at the pier ready for the ferry.
Book trains at: seat61.com for route guidance, or the State Railway of Thailand website (dticket.railway.co.th).
Option 3: Bus to Surat Thani + Ferry
Similar to the train option but by bus. Overnight buses from Bangkok’s Southern Bus Terminal (Sai Tai Mai) to Surat Thani take 8–10 hours. Several operators run this route with departures from approximately 6pm–9pm.
Cost as of 2026:
- Standard bus: approximately ฿400–500
- VIP bus (wider seats, fewer rows): approximately ฿550–700
- Ferry from Donsak: approximately ฿150–250
Combined bus+ferry tickets are available and include the pier transfer — approximately ฿600–900 total through operators like Lomprayah or Phantip.
Best for: Budget travellers when train sleepers are fully booked, or those who prefer a bus to a train. The VIP buses are reasonably comfortable for overnight travel.
Lomprayah combined service: Lomprayah operates a direct bus-to-catamaran service (bus from Bangkok, catamaran from Chumphon pier to Koh Samui). This uses a faster catamaran than the Donsak ferries but routes through Chumphon rather than Surat Thani. Total journey approximately 10–11 hours. Book at lomprayah.com — approximately ฿1,100–1,400 as of 2026.
Which Option to Choose?
| Traveller type | Best option | Approximate cost | Total time |
|---|---|---|---|
| Short trip / time matters | Fly direct (Bangkok Airways) | ฿1,500–4,000 | 3–4 hours |
| Budget but want to fly | Fly to Surat Thani + ferry | ฿1,000–1,800 | 5–6 hours |
| Budget / love train travel | Train + ferry | ฿800–2,000 | 11–13 hours |
| Flexibility on timing | Bus + ferry | ฿600–900 | 11–13 hours |
Most travellers on holidays of a week or less fly — the time saving justifies the cost. The train is best for slow travellers, those doing Bangkok to Koh Samui as part of a longer southern Thailand trip, or those who want the sleeper train experience. The Surat Thani fly-and-ferry option is the best compromise between speed and budget. For the full picture of transport across Thailand, see our getting around Thailand guide.
Tips
- Book train sleepers early — lower berths in second class sell out days ahead, especially around Thai holidays and the December–January peak season.
- Ferry schedules from Donsak to Nathon pier (Koh Samui) run approximately hourly from 6am to 6pm. The last ferry varies by operator — check on the day.
- Arriving at Nathon pier on Koh Samui, shared taxis (songthaew) run to Chaweng (approximately ฿100, 30 minutes), Lamai (approximately ฿100, 25 minutes), and other beaches. Private taxis from the pier cost approximately ฿400–600.
- Rainy season (October–December on the Gulf coast) doesn’t affect flights or trains but can cause rough sea crossings. Ferries rarely cancel but can be uncomfortable in heavy swells. See our best time to visit Thailand for month-by-month guidance on the Gulf coast and Andaman seasons.
