Remote Work
Digital Nomad in Thailand: Remote Work Guide 2026
Thailand has been a digital nomad destination since before the term existed. Chiang Mai in particular has had a functioning remote worker ecosystem for over a decade — coworking spaces, reliable fibre internet in cafes, a community of long-term nomads, and a cost of living that makes most Western salaries go a long way. Bangkok has caught up considerably, offering everything a major Asian capital provides plus the infrastructure nomads need.
The main limitation is the visa situation. Thailand does not have a dedicated digital nomad visa as of 2026 — though the Long-Term Resident (LTR) visa exists for those earning above $80,000/year. The standard option is the tourist visa (60 days extendable to 90) or the METV (multiple-entry tourist visa, 6 months). The Thailand Elite visa (฿600,000 for 5 years) is the cleaner option for longer stays. The time zone (UTC+7) works well with Australian business hours and European afternoon calls.

Visa & Practicalities
Tourist Visa Options
Most Western nationalities receive a 30-day visa exemption on arrival. The TR tourist visa (applied at a Thai consulate) grants 60 days, extendable once for 30 more days in-country (฿1,900). The METV allows 6 months of multiple-entry tourist stays. The Long-Term Resident (LTR) visa is the cleanest option for established remote workers earning above $80,000/year.
SIM Cards
AIS has the best 4G/5G coverage nationally, including mountains and rural areas. DTAC and True Move H are solid in cities. Buy at the airport or any operator shop with your passport. Tourist SIMs with 15–30GB data cost ฿200–500 ($6–14) for 30 days. eSIM options (Airalo) are available from $8 USD and activate before you land.
Internet & Coworking
Cafe WiFi in cities typically runs 50–300 Mbps. Coworking spaces (up to 1 Gbps with backup connections) are strongest in Chiang Mai (CAMP, Yellow, Mango) and Bangkok (The Hive, CommonGround, The Housedog). Day passes: ฿200–400 ($6–12). Monthly memberships: ฿3,000–7,000 ($85–200). Islands (Koh Phangan, Phuket) have improved significantly since 2022 — fibre is now available in most coworking spaces.
Visa Reset Options
Penang, Malaysia is the classic Thai visa run destination — Penang Hill, street food, and a Thai consulate that processes quickly. Kuala Lumpur is a 1-hour flight. Vientiane, Laos is a half-day bus from Chiang Mai. Consistency of re-entry after multiple consecutive border runs is at the immigration officer's discretion — the METV or Thailand Elite visa eliminates this uncertainty.
