Phuket vs Krabi: Which Andaman Destination Is Right for You?
Phuket and Krabi both sit on Thailand’s Andaman coast, share the same sea, and are separated by only 160 km of coastline. Yet they offer genuinely different travel experiences. Phuket is Thailand’s largest island and its most developed beach destination — a place of international airports, luxury resort hotels, and a party scene with global reach. Krabi is a smaller, quieter province defined by dramatic limestone karsts, cleaner beaches, and a pace that still feels like the Thailand of 20 years ago — in the best possible way.

Costs
Phuket is Thailand’s most expensive beach destination. A budget room in Patong or Kata Beach runs THB 800–1,500 per night for a basic guesthouse. Mid-range beach-adjacent hotels in Kata or Kamala cost THB 2,000–4,500. Restaurants on the beachfront charge THB 200–500 per main course. A day trip to Phi Phi costs around THB 800–1,200. Total daily spend for a budget traveller lands around THB 1,800–2,800 (USD 52–80).
Krabi is meaningfully cheaper. Guesthouses in Ao Nang start from THB 500–800 per night. Mid-range hotels in Ao Nang or Klong Muang Beach run THB 1,200–2,500. The seafood restaurants along the Ao Nang beach road are good value at THB 150–350 per main. A Four Islands day trip costs THB 500–700. Budget travellers typically spend THB 1,200–1,900 per day (USD 35–55).
Beaches
Phuket has a long west-facing coastline with multiple distinct beach areas. Kata Beach is the pick for quality — wide sand, reliable surf, and a pleasant local town behind it. Kamala is calm and upmarket. Patong is the most convenient but the busiest, with jet skis, sunbed operators, and wall-to-wall beach vendors. Bang Tao is a long, quieter beach in the north with some of Phuket’s best resorts. None of Phuket’s main beaches compare to the best of Krabi in terms of raw scenery.
Krabi’s beaches are genuinely spectacular. Railay Beach — accessible only by longtail boat from Ao Nang (THB 100 per person, 15 minutes) — sits between towering limestone cliffs and is one of Thailand’s best beaches. Phra Nang Cave Beach at the tip of the Railay peninsula has arguably the best sand in the region and remarkable cave formations. Ao Nang itself is pleasant but busy. The Four Islands day trip accesses white-sand beaches and excellent snorkelling that Phuket’s main beaches cannot match.
Activities
Phuket offers wide activity variety. Big Buddha (free, open 6:00–19:30) is the most visited non-beach attraction — the views over the island are excellent. Bangla Road at night is a spectacle in itself. Day trips to Phi Phi Islands from Rassada Pier (THB 800–1,200) are excellent. Phang Nga Bay tours departing from Phuket (THB 1,200–1,800) take in James Bond Island and the famous sea caves. Water sports, muay thai shows, and cooking classes fill out the options.
Krabi is an activities destination at its core. Rock climbing on the limestone karsts around Railay and Tonsai is world-class — Basecamp Tonsai and King Climbers both run guided half-day trips from THB 1,200–1,500. Kayaking through the mangroves and sea caves of Ao Thalane takes approximately 3 hours (guided tours from THB 700). The Four Islands trip (THB 600–900) is consistently excellent. Tiger Cave Temple (Wat Tham Suea) outside Krabi Town has 1,237 steps to a summit viewpoint — free, and one of the region’s best short hikes.
Nightlife
Phuket’s Patong is one of Southeast Asia’s most developed beach resort nightlife zones. Bangla Road — a 400-metre strip of bars, clubs, and open-air party venues — runs until dawn. Illuzion Nightclub and Tiger Nightclub attract international DJs. Beach clubs — Catch Beach Club in Bang Tao (free entry, drinks from THB 350) and Dream Beach Club — offer more sophisticated options. The rooftop bar at Novotel Kamala is excellent for sunset drinks.
Krabi is quiet by comparison. The Ao Nang strip has beach bars and restaurants that stay open until midnight. Lak Tong Beach Bar is relaxed with fire shows on weekends. Railay has a few bars on the beach but closes early. Travellers who want serious nightlife should choose Phuket without hesitation — or make Phuket their party base and Krabi their quiet recovery destination.
Accommodation
Phuket has Thailand’s densest concentration of international resort brands. The Rosewood Phuket at Patong Headland commands THB 12,000–25,000 per night. SALA Phuket in Mai Khao has overwater bungalows from THB 8,000–15,000. Mid-range standouts include the Novotel Phuket Kamala Beach (THB 3,500–5,500) and the Holiday Inn Resort Phuket (Patong, THB 2,800–4,200). Budget guesthouses in Kata Town run THB 700–1,200.
Krabi has fewer international brands but excellent boutique options. Rayavadee at Railay Beach (accessible only by boat) is one of Thailand’s most spectacular resort settings at THB 12,000–20,000 per night. Phra Nang Inn at Ao Nang (THB 1,800–3,200) is solid mid-range with a pool and easy beach access. Budget option: Phra Ae Long Beach at Klong Muang has guesthouses from THB 600–900 in a quieter northern beach area.
Getting Around
Phuket is best explored by rented scooter (THB 200–300/day) or songthaew (shared taxis following set routes, THB 25–40 per trip between beach areas). Grab operates in Phuket and is reliable. Taxis between the airport and southern beaches cost THB 600–800 — the airport limousine desk pricing is fixed, but Grab is typically 30–40% cheaper.
Krabi’s main hub is Ao Nang, walkable within 20 minutes. Longtail boats connect Ao Nang to Railay (THB 100/person, 15 minutes). Songthaews run from Krabi Town to Ao Nang (THB 50, 30 minutes). Scooter rental in Ao Nang is available from THB 200/day but the roads are narrow and hilly — less essential than in Phuket.
When to Visit
Both Phuket and Krabi share the same Andaman coast season. The dry season runs from November to April — calm seas, clear skies, excellent visibility for diving and snorkelling. May to October is the wet season: rain comes in heavy afternoon showers rather than all-day downpours, sea conditions are rougher, and some boat services to outer islands are suspended. Phuket partially compensates with its east-coast Phang Nga Bay access during wet season. Krabi’s outdoor activities are more severely affected by rough seas.
Verdict
Choose Phuket if you want nightlife, more resort infrastructure, a larger island to explore, and easy connections to Phang Nga Bay and Phi Phi.
Choose Krabi if you want the Andaman coast’s best scenery, world-class rock climbing, quieter beaches, a lower daily spend, and the most dramatic limestone karst landscape in Thailand.
Many visitors combine them — fly into Krabi, spend 5 days exploring Railay and the Four Islands, then cross to Phuket by ferry or minivan for the last 2–3 days. That itinerary hits the best of both coasts.
