Thailand in June: Weather, Crowds and What to Expect

Golden Buddha statue at silver temple, Chiang Mai — Thailand in June

June is deep into the southwest monsoon on the Andaman Coast, but the Gulf of Thailand enjoys dry, calm conditions. Prices are at their lowest across much of the country, making June a strong choice for budget travellers willing to pick destinations carefully. The north is green and refreshed after the burning season haze.

Weather by Region

Bangkok is hot (32-35°C) and humid with frequent afternoon downpours. Rain typically arrives in heavy bursts lasting 1-2 hours, often in the late afternoon. The city never shuts down for rain — the BTS, MRT, shopping malls, and covered markets all function regardless. Morning sightseeing followed by afternoon shelter is the standard pattern.

Chiang Mai and the north benefit from rain clearing the air after months of smoke haze. Temperatures are warm (28-33°C) with regular showers. The mountains and forests are lush and green. Waterfalls around Doi Inthanon and Doi Suthep are at their most impressive. This is a good month for elephant sanctuaries, cooking classes, and temple visits between rain showers.

Andaman Coast (Phuket, Krabi, Koh Phi Phi) is in full monsoon. Heavy rain, rough seas, and red flag warnings on west-facing beaches are common. Some beach bars and restaurants close for the season. However, east-facing beaches in Phuket (Rawai, Cape Panwa) are more sheltered. The Similan Islands remain closed until November.

Gulf Coast (Koh Samui, Koh Phangan, Koh Tao) is dry and sunny. June is one of the best months for Koh Samui — calm seas, warm water, clear skies, and significantly fewer tourists than the December-February peak. The Full Moon Party on Koh Phangan runs year-round and June parties are well-attended but less chaotic than peak season.

Phi Ta Khon (Ghost Festival)

The Phi Ta Khon festival in Dan Sai, Loei province (northeastern Thailand) typically falls in June or July, depending on the lunar calendar. Locals wear colourful ghost masks carved from coconut tree trunks and parade through town in a raucous celebration blending Buddhist tradition with folk animism. The exact dates are announced by the town’s medium only a few weeks in advance. It is one of Thailand’s most photogenic and authentic regional festivals — genuinely local, not a tourist event.

Diving

Gulf side diving is excellent. Koh Tao dive sites (Chumphon Pinnacle, Sail Rock, Japanese Gardens) have warm water (29-30°C) and reasonable visibility. June is a popular month for dive certifications — schools offer competitive pricing and smaller class sizes than the December-March rush. Andaman diving is essentially closed, with the Similans and Surin Islands shut until November.

Island Access

Koh Lipe remains inaccessible by Thai ferry (services suspended May-October). Speedboats from Langkawi operate weather-dependent. Koh Phi Phi and Koh Lanta maintain reduced ferry services from Krabi and Phuket, but crossings can be rough and cancellations happen. The Gulf islands (Koh Samui, Koh Phangan, Koh Tao) have full ferry services running without disruption.

Prices and Crowds

June is low season across Thailand. Andaman Coast resorts offer their deepest discounts — 40-60% off peak rates at many Phuket and Krabi hotels. Gulf Coast prices are moderate, reflecting the good conditions. Bangkok and Chiang Mai hotels are very affordable. International flights are at their cheapest in June-September.
