Thailand in July: Weather, Crowds and What to Expect
July splits Thailand into two distinct experiences. The Gulf Coast is sunny and calm — excellent for island hopping between Koh Samui, Koh Phangan, and Koh Tao. The Andaman Coast (Phuket, Krabi, Koh Phi Phi) is deep in the southwest monsoon, with heavy afternoon rains and rough seas. Choosing the right coast is the single most important decision for a July trip.
Weather by Region
Bangkok is hot and humid at 28-34°C with frequent afternoon downpours. Rain typically arrives in sharp bursts lasting 1-2 hours, followed by clearing skies. Flooding risk is low in July (the worst flooding occurs in September-October). The city is fully functional — temples, markets, and malls are unaffected.
Chiang Mai and the north see regular rainfall and high humidity. Temperatures sit at 25-33°C. The mountains around Doi Suthep are lush and green, waterfalls are at full flow, and elephant sanctuaries operate year-round. The smoke season that plagues the north from February to April is long gone — air quality in July is good.
Andaman Coast (Phuket, Krabi, Koh Phi Phi, Koh Lanta) is in full southwest monsoon. Expect 15-20 rainy days, rough seas, and some ferry cancellations. The Similan Islands are closed from May through October. Phuket’s west coast beaches see strong surf — red flag swimming warnings are common. That said, mornings are often clear and accommodation prices drop 40-60% from peak rates.
Gulf Coast (Koh Samui, Koh Phangan, Koh Tao) is the standout in July. The Gulf monsoon does not arrive until October, so July sits in a dry inter-monsoon window. Seas are calm, sunshine is reliable, and conditions are excellent for beach days and boat trips between the three islands.
Diving and Snorkelling
Koh Tao is diveable year-round, but July falls within its best window (March-October). Visibility reaches 15-25 metres and whale shark sightings around Chumphon Pinnacle occasionally occur in summer months. Sail Rock, between Koh Tao and Koh Phangan, is at its best for experienced divers. On the Andaman side, the Similan Islands and Surin Islands are closed — liveaboard operators do not run trips between May and October.
Festivals and Events
Asarnha Bucha Day (full moon of the 8th lunar month, usually mid-July) marks the Buddha’s first sermon and is a national public holiday. Temples across Thailand hold candlelit processions (Wien Thien) in the evening. The following day is Khao Phansa — the start of Buddhist Lent, a three-month period when monks retreat to their monasteries. Both days are alcohol-free: bars, restaurants, and shops cannot sell alcohol by law.
The Full Moon Party on Koh Phangan draws 10,000-20,000 people in July. Haad Rin beach fills with fire dancers, sound systems, and an all-night crowd. Book Koh Phangan accommodation at least 2-3 weeks ahead for Full Moon Party dates.
Prices and Crowds
July is low season pricing across most of Thailand. Andaman Coast resorts offer their steepest discounts — 40-60% below December rates. Gulf islands are busier than the Andaman side but still well below peak season crowds and prices. Bangkok hotels run mid-season rates. Flights from Europe are moderately priced, though school holiday demand from the UK and France can push fares up slightly.

Frequently Asked Questions
- Is July good for Koh Samui?
- Yes — Koh Samui and the Gulf islands are in their dry inter-monsoon season in July (and August). The weather is sunny, seas are calm, and the Full Moon Party on Koh Phangan is a big draw. Very good conditions for the Gulf islands in July.
- Is Koh Phi Phi open in July?
- Koh Phi Phi is open in July but the Andaman monsoon brings heavy rains and rough seas. Ferries still run but can be disrupted. The island is quieter and accommodation is very cheap — good for budget travellers who don't mind rain.
- What is the best Thai island in July?
- Koh Samui, Koh Phangan, and Koh Tao (Gulf of Thailand coast) are the best choices in July — they are dry and sunny when the Andaman Coast is wet. The Full Moon Party in July is particularly popular.
