Thailand in January: Weather, Crowds and What to Expect

Wat Arun temple on the Chao Phraya River, Bangkok — January in Thailand

January is Thailand at its most welcoming. Both coastlines are in dry season, temperatures are warm without being oppressive, and the skies are reliably clear. This is peak high season, which means higher prices and crowds at popular resorts — but also the best possible conditions for beaches, diving, and sightseeing.

Weather by Region

Bangkok sits at 28-32°C with low humidity and almost no rain. January is the coolest and most comfortable month for exploring the capital on foot — temple visits, canal boat rides, and Chinatown street food are all far more enjoyable without the sweltering heat that arrives from March onward.

Chiang Mai and the north are cool and dry, with overnight temperatures dropping to 15-20°C in the mountains. Daytime highs reach 28-30°C. The air is generally clear in January (burning season does not start until February), making this the best month for trekking around Doi Inthanon and visiting hill tribe villages.

Andaman Coast (Phuket, Krabi, Koh Phi Phi, Koh Lanta) is in prime dry season. Seas are calm, visibility for diving and snorkelling reaches 25-30 metres, and ferries run to all islands without disruption. The Similan Islands are open and at their best — liveaboard diving trips to Richelieu Rock have the clearest water conditions of the year.

Gulf Coast (Koh Samui, Koh Phangan, Koh Tao) is also in peak season. The Gulf monsoon ended in December and January brings calm seas, warm water, and reliable sunshine. Koh Tao diving conditions are excellent with visibility reaching 20+ metres.

Diving and Snorkelling

January is one of the two best months (alongside February) for diving across the entire country. The Similan Islands liveaboard season is in full swing — whale shark sightings off Chumphon Pinnacle peak between January and March. Book liveaboards at least 4-6 weeks ahead as capacity fills fast during high season.

Festivals and Events

January is relatively quiet on the festival calendar after the New Year celebrations. Chinese New Year preparations begin in late January in Bangkok’s Yaowarat (Chinatown) district, with markets and decorations appearing in the final week. The Bor Sang Umbrella Festival in Chiang Mai sometimes falls in mid-January, showcasing hand-painted parasol making and traditional Lanna craftsmanship.

Prices and Crowds

January is peak high season. Expect the highest hotel rates of the year at beach resorts, particularly Phuket, Koh Samui, and Krabi. Booking 6-8 weeks ahead is essential for popular beachfront accommodation. Budget guesthouses and hostels in Bangkok and Chiang Mai are less affected by seasonal pricing but still fill up. Flights from Europe and Australia are at their most expensive.
