February rivals January as Thailand’s best month overall. Dry season continues across both coastlines, temperatures are warm without the brutal heat that arrives in March and April, and sea conditions remain excellent for diving and island hopping. The one downside: burning season begins in the north.
Weather by Region
Bangkok is warm and dry at 29-33°C with very little rain. Humidity is low by Bangkok standards, making this one of the most comfortable months for walking tours of the Grand Palace, Wat Pho, and the canal neighbourhoods. Evenings are pleasant for rooftop bars and night markets.
Chiang Mai and the north remain dry but burning season begins in February. Agricultural and forest burning creates a haze that worsens through March and into April. Air quality can deteriorate significantly, particularly in valleys where smoke is trapped. If you have respiratory sensitivities, consider visiting Chiang Mai in November-January instead.
Andaman Coast (Phuket, Krabi, Koh Phi Phi, Koh Lanta) is at peak conditions. The Similan Islands are open with superb visibility for liveaboard diving. February is considered the single best month for Similan diving - water temperature sits at 28-29°C with 25-30 metre visibility. Koh Lipe in the far south is accessible by ferry and at its most pristine.
Gulf Coast (Koh Samui, Koh Phangan, Koh Tao) continues in peak season. Calm seas, warm water, and consistent sunshine. Koh Tao remains one of the world’s most affordable places to earn a PADI Open Water certification, and February offers the best conditions for it.
Festivals and Events
Chinese New Year (late January or February, date varies by lunar calendar) transforms Bangkok’s Yaowarat Chinatown into a sea of red lanterns, dragon dances, and street food stalls. The celebrations are among the largest outside of China. Phuket’s old town also hosts significant Chinese New Year events given the island’s Hokkien heritage.
The Chiang Mai Flower Festival takes place in early February with flower-decorated floats parading through the old city, beauty pageants, and garden displays at Suan Buak Haad park. It is a genuinely local event, not a tourist production.
Diving Season
February is arguably the best diving month in Thailand. The Similan Islands and Surin Islands are at peak conditions. Whale shark sightings at Chumphon Pinnacle (near Koh Tao) increase from February through April. Richelieu Rock, regularly ranked among the world’s top dive sites, has optimal visibility.
Prices and Crowds
Still high season pricing across the country. February half-term holidays from Europe and school breaks from Australia add to demand. Beach resort prices remain at peak levels. Booking 4-8 weeks ahead is advisable for Phuket and Koh Samui. Bangkok hotels offer better value as the city has enormous capacity.

Accommodation Prices in February
February pricing mirrors January at most beach resorts. Phuket beachfront hotels run from approximately 3,500–12,000 THB per night; mid-range options in Patong or Kata start around 1,200–2,500 THB. Koh Samui resorts average 2,500–6,000 THB for a decent sea-view room. Bangkok is better value - expect 1,200–2,500 THB for a 3-star, 4,000–8,000 THB for a 4-star in central neighbourhoods. Valentine’s Day week (around 14 February) sees premiums at romantic resorts - book well ahead if you are travelling for a special occasion.
What to Pack
Light summer clothing throughout. Chiang Mai evenings can drop to 15°C - a light jacket is useful. For the coast: reef-safe sunscreen, a lightweight rash vest, and sandals you can wear in the water. Temple visits require covered shoulders and knees - a sarong or loose cotton trousers weighs almost nothing and avoids being turned away at the entrance.
