Thailand in August: Weather, Crowds and What to Expect
August mirrors July’s weather pattern: the Gulf Coast remains dry and sunny while the Andaman Coast continues through the southwest monsoon. The key difference is a major national holiday — HM Queen Sirikit’s Birthday on August 12 — and a slight uptick in domestic travel around that long weekend.
Weather by Region
Bangkok is hot and wet at 28-34°C. Afternoon storms are frequent but short-lived, usually clearing within an hour. August is marginally wetter than July, with 15-18 rainy days expected. The BTS, MRT, and air-conditioned malls make Bangkok manageable in the rain. Flooding risk remains low — the critical flood months are September and October.
Chiang Mai and the north sit at 24-33°C with regular rain and high humidity. The countryside is at its greenest. Doi Inthanon National Park trails are open, waterfalls are spectacular, and the lack of tourists means elephant sanctuaries and cooking classes have plenty of availability. Air quality is good — far better than the February-April burning season.
Andaman Coast (Phuket, Krabi, Koh Phi Phi, Koh Lanta) remains in monsoon. The Similan Islands stay closed through October. Phuket’s west coast beaches have red flag warnings for strong currents. East coast beaches (Rawai, Cape Panwa) are more sheltered and swimmable. Hotel prices are at their lowest point of the year — budget travellers can find excellent beachfront rooms that cost three times as much in December.
Gulf Coast (Koh Samui, Koh Phangan, Koh Tao) continues its dry spell. August is the last full month of calm Gulf conditions before the October monsoon arrives. Seas are warm (28-30°C), visibility for snorkelling is good, and island-hopping ferries run on schedule between all three islands.
Diving and Snorkelling
Koh Tao remains in its peak diving window (March-October). August conditions offer 15-20 metre visibility, warm water, and calm surface conditions. The PADI open water course — Koh Tao’s signature activity — is best done now when dive boats are uncrowded and instructors have time for smaller groups. Sail Rock between Koh Tao and Koh Phangan is excellent for advanced divers. No Andaman liveaboards operate — the Similan and Surin Islands are closed until November.
Festivals and Events
HM Queen Sirikit’s Birthday (August 12) is a national public holiday and also celebrated as Thai Mother’s Day. Government buildings and streets are decorated with blue (the Queen’s colour) and portraits. Expect closures at government offices and some businesses. The long weekend prompts domestic travel — Gulf island accommodation fills faster than usual, so book ahead if your trip coincides.
The Full Moon Party on Koh Phangan continues monthly. August dates draw a lively crowd — slightly smaller than July but still 10,000+ attendees on Haad Rin beach.
Prices and Crowds
August is solidly low season. Andaman Coast resorts offer their deepest discounts. Gulf islands carry moderate pricing — higher than the Andaman side but 30-40% below December-January rates. Bangkok and Chiang Mai hotels are well-priced. European school holidays (particularly France, Italy, and Scandinavia) mean slightly more Western tourists in August than other low-season months, but the difference is minor compared to peak season volumes.
