Koh Samet is a 6km-long national park island 200km southeast of Bangkok — the closest proper island to the capital, reachable in under 4 hours from central Bangkok. Its beaches are made of fine white quartz sand and the water is among the clearest in the Gulf of Thailand. Most visitors arrive for a weekend escape rather than a week-long stay, and organised tours reflect that: longtail island circuits that cover the southern coves in a morning, snorkel tours to the best reef points, and sunset boat trips around the headlands.
The island’s national park status (entry fee: THB 200 per person) limits development — no high-rise hotels, no heavy commercial tour infrastructure. Most tours are operated by small longtail boat owners and local dive shops rather than the large operators found on Koh Samui or Phuket.
We have listed the top Koh Samet tours below. Prices are approximate in THB as of 2026.

For Island Exploration
Longtail Island Circuit — Southern Coves
The best beaches on Koh Samet are at the southern end — Ao Wai, Ao Kiu, and the smaller bays between — but reaching them overland requires a rough dirt track or a steep walk. Longtail boats make these southern coves accessible in 30–45 minutes from Na Dan pier or Hat Sai Kaew, stopping at two or three coves for beach time, and looping back. Ao Kiu at the southwestern tip has some of the clearest water and most pristine sand on the island; it has no permanent accommodation and sees far fewer people than the northern beaches.
Duration: Half day (morning departure approximately 08:30) | Price: from approximately THB 600–900 (shared longtail) | Includes: longtail boat, stops at 2–3 southern beaches | Note: national park entry fee (THB 200) payable at Na Dan pier if not already paid | Best time: weekday mornings — on Thai long weekends even the southern beaches can fill with day-trippers from Bangkok
Tip: negotiate directly with longtail boat operators at Na Dan pier or Hat Sai Kaew beach rather than booking through a hotel — the price difference is significant and the boats are identical.
Full-Day Day Trip Package from Bangkok
Organised full-day Bangkok day trips to Koh Samet handle the entire journey: minivan pickup from Bangkok hotels or Victory Monument, transfer to Ban Phe pier in Rayong (3–3.5 hours), ferry to Koh Samet (30 minutes), and return in the afternoon. The package typically includes national park entry, beach time at Hat Sai Kaew, and sometimes a short longtail circuit to the southern coves. These tours suit Bangkok-based visitors who don’t want to navigate the bus-ferry combination independently.
Duration: Full day (approximately 06:30 Bangkok departure, 20:00–21:00 return) | Price: from approximately THB 1,800 | Includes: transport from Bangkok, ferry, national park entry; lunch and activities extra | Note: the travel time each way is significant for a day trip — the actual beach time is typically 4–5 hours
For Snorkelling
Snorkel Tour to Ao Kiu and Ao Cho
The rocky headlands and submerged points at Ao Cho and Ao Kiu (Koh Samet’s southern tip) have the best accessible snorkelling on the island — clearer water than the busier northern beaches, with parrotfish, damselfish, and occasional reef fish in the coral sections. Longtail-based snorkel tours depart from Hat Sai Kaew in the morning, stopping at Ao Cho’s eastern headland and the rocky southern point at Ao Kiu for 30–45 minutes each.
Duration: Half day | Price: from approximately THB 800 | Includes: longtail, snorkelling equipment, guide | Note: the snorkelling at Koh Samet is good rather than exceptional — expectations should be calibrated accordingly; it is significantly better than anything accessible directly off the main beaches
Self-Guided Snorkel from the Shore
Mask and fins are available for hire at beach shops along Hat Sai Kaew and Ao Phai (approximately THB 100–150/day). The rocky points at the ends of Ao Hin Khok and Ao Cho are accessible from the shore and have fish-populated reef sections in 1–4 metres of water. This is a low-cost, independent alternative to organised snorkel tours — suitable for confident swimmers who don’t need a guide or boat transport.
How to access: Walk south from Hat Sai Kaew along the beach path to the rocky headlands between bays | Best time: 07:00–09:00 before the day-trip longtails increase water traffic around the headlands
Sunset and Evening
Sunset Longtail Cruise
Departing Hat Sai Kaew or Na Dan pier around 16:30–17:00, a 2-hour longtail circuit follows the island’s eastern coastline south, rounding the headlands between bays in the late afternoon light. The light from the east-facing beaches and rocky points is at its best in the hour before sunset. A shared longtail for a group of 4–8 people gives a more personal experience than joining a tour boat.
Duration: 2 hours | Price: from approximately THB 400 per person (shared) | Best for: couples, photographers, travellers wanting to see the island from the water without committing to a full day
Kayaking
Kayak + Snorkel Combo
Kayak rentals are available at most beach shops along Hat Sai Kaew and Ao Phai (approximately THB 150–200/hour for a single; THB 200–300 for a double). The coastline between Hat Sai Kaew and Ao Phai is calm and easy to paddle — the rocky headlands between bays are accessible by kayak and have snorkelling-depth reef sections at their bases. A half-day paddling the coastline and snorkelling from the kayak is the most independent tour option on the island.
Duration: Half day | Price: from approximately THB 300–500 (kayak rental + snorkel hire) | Self-guided: yes — no guide required for the main beach coastline | Note: the coastline north of Hat Sai Kaew toward Na Dan pier is less interesting; paddle south
Stand-Up Paddleboard Lesson
SUP rental and lessons are available at Hat Sai Kaew and Ao Phai from several operators, usually running 90-minute beginner sessions from approximately THB 500. The calm, protected beach at Ao Phai is the better learning spot — Hat Sai Kaew can have moderate chop when the wind picks up in the afternoon.
Duration: 90 minutes–2 hours | Price: from approximately THB 500 | Includes: board, paddle, instructor for beginner session
Practical Information
Weekdays vs weekends: The difference on Koh Samet is larger than on most Thai islands. On a Tuesday in mid-season, Hat Sai Kaew is relaxed and longtail operators are available and negotiable. On a Saturday in a Thai long weekend, the island is severely crowded and prices for longtails and accommodation can double. Plan mid-week if possible — or go very early on weekend mornings.
National park entry: THB 200 per person, collected at Na Dan pier on arrival or at park checkpoints inland. It applies to everyone, every visit — day-trippers and overnight guests alike. Keep the receipt.
Cash: ATMs at Na Dan and Hat Sai Kaew run out of cash on long weekends. Bring sufficient baht from the mainland. Most tour operators and small boat owners are cash-only.
Best season: Koh Samet’s east-facing beaches are protected from the southwest monsoon, making it one of the few Thai islands with reliable enough weather to visit year-round. That said, October–November sees the tail of the northeast monsoon with periodic heavy rain. The driest and calmest period is December to May.
Getting there from Bangkok: Bus from Ekkamai (Eastern Bus Terminal) to Ban Phe: THB 180–250, approximately 3 hours. Minivan from Victory Monument or Ekamai to Ban Phe: THB 200–250. Ferry from Ban Phe pier to Na Dan, Koh Samet: THB 70, 30 minutes. Total journey: 3.5–4 hours from central Bangkok.
