Bangkok to the Islands: How to Get to Koh Samui, Koh Tao, and Phuket

Bangkok sits roughly 650–900 km from Thailand’s main island groups. There is no ferry from Bangkok - you need to reach a southern hub first. The good news is that the connections are well-developed and well-priced, with options ranging from a ฿600 night train to a ฿1,500 one-hour flight.

Know Your Islands First

Thailand’s islands fall into two groups:

Gulf of Thailand (east coast): Koh Samui, Koh Phangan, Koh Tao. Main hub is Surat Thani - fly there, take the train there, or get a through-bus. Ferries depart from Surat Thani’s Don Sak Pier or the town pier.

Andaman Sea (west coast): Phuket, Phi Phi Island, Krabi, Koh Lanta. Fly to Phuket or Krabi, or take the bus south. No train connection to the Andaman coast - the rail line follows the Gulf side.

Option 1: Fly to Surat Thani + Ferry

The fastest route for Gulf islands if you’re not on a tight budget.

Option 3: Overnight Train + Ferry

The classic backpacker route and the best value for overnight travel.

Total Bangkok → Koh Samui overnight train: approximately 13–15 hours. Budget approximately ฿650–฿1,000 all-in. Best for: budget travellers, those who enjoy the train experience, or those with flexible timing.

Option 4: Overnight Bus + Ferry

Several operators run direct overnight bus Bangkok → Surat Thani, with combined ferry ticket included. Departures typically 18:00–20:00 from Khao San Road area or Ekkamai Bus Terminal.

• For the Phuket–Phi Phi leg, book ferry tickets in advance to guarantee a seat in high season - the route fills fast from December through March.
• Don’t cut it too close: if your first leg is delayed (flights particularly), having buffer time before the last ferry of the day matters. The last Seatran from Don Sak to Koh Samui is typically around 19:00 - miss it and you’re in Surat Thani overnight.
