Most embassies sit in Bangkok, so if something goes wrong in Phuket, Krabi or Chiang Mai you will usually deal with them by phone or email first. We recommend saving your embassy’s details before you fly. Contact details change, so always confirm on the official government page for your country.

In an emergency
The Grand Palace complex in Bangkok, the usual first stop for a Day 1 sightseeing loop.
Local services come first. Call the Tourist Police on 1155 (English-speaking), 191 for police or 1669 for medical emergencies. Then phone your embassy. Our guides to staying safe in Thailand and common scams cover what to avoid before it comes to that.
What embassies can and cannot do
They can issue emergency travel documents, help you contact family, give lists of English-speaking doctors and lawyers, and check on you if you are arrested or in hospital. They cannot pay medical bills, fines or bail, get you out of jail, or interfere with Thai law. Good travel insurance covers the costs embassies will not.
If your passport is lost or stolen
Temple rooftops among the buildings of central Bangkok.
- Report it to the police, or the Tourist Police on 1155, and get the written report. You will need it for everything else.
- Contact your embassy to apply for a replacement or emergency travel document. Bring photos, any copy of your passport and the police report.
- Visit Thai Immigration with the new document so your entry record and permitted stay are sorted before departure. Overstays are penalised, as covered in our Thailand visa guide.
- Cancel or report any stolen cards, and tell your insurer.
Keep a photo of your passport photo page and entry stamp in cloud storage. It speeds up every step.
