Practical Tips
- Overnight train booking: Book second-class sleeper berths through 12Go.asia or at Bangkok’s train station at least a week ahead. Lower berths are wider and have a window; upper berths are cheaper but narrower.
- Phi Phi luggage: Travel light for the Phi Phi leg. Large suitcases are awkward on ferries and the island has no roads — you carry everything from the pier.
- Maya Bay booking: Since 2022, Maya Bay requires pre-booked time slots and limits daily visitors. Most tour operators handle this, but confirm before booking.
- Phuket scooter rental: International driving permit (IDP) is technically required. Helmets are mandatory — police checkpoints are common and fines are THB 500.
- Island ATMs: Phi Phi has ATMs but they charge approximately THB 220 per withdrawal for foreign cards. Withdraw enough cash in Phuket before the ferry.

Frequently Asked Questions
- Is 10 days enough for Thailand?
- Ten days covers the three main regions — Bangkok, the north (Chiang Mai) and the south (Phuket and Phi Phi). You get enough time at each stop to go beyond the surface without feeling rushed. To add Koh Samui or Pai, extend to two weeks.
- Should I take the overnight train or fly to Chiang Mai?
- The overnight train is a classic Thailand experience and saves one night of accommodation. Second-class sleeper berths cost approximately THB 800–1,000 and the journey takes 12–13 hours (depart Bangkok 18:00, arrive Chiang Mai 07:00). Flying takes 1h20m and costs from THB 800–2,000. The train is recommended if you enjoy train travel and want to save money; fly if time is tight.
- When is the best time for the Bangkok–Chiang Mai–Phuket route?
- November through February works for all three stops — dry weather, comfortable temperatures. Avoid the Andaman coast (Phuket, Phi Phi) from June through October when the monsoon brings heavy rain and rough seas. Chiang Mai's burning season (March–April) causes air quality issues.
- How much should I budget for 10 days in Thailand?
- Budget travellers can manage approximately THB 25,000–35,000 (USD 725–1,015) for 10 days including transport, accommodation, food and activities. Mid-range travellers spending THB 50,000–80,000 (USD 1,450–2,320) get comfortable hotels, sit-down restaurants and guided tours. These are estimates as of 2026.
