Where to Stay in Krabi: Ao Nang, Railay, Krabi Town, or Klong Muang

Longtail boats on Railay beach with limestone cliffs, Krabi

Krabi is a province, not a single resort town — and where you base yourself changes the trip completely. The four realistic options are Ao Nang (the main tourist hub), Railay (the famous boat-access peninsula), Krabi Town (the cheap transport hub), and the Klong Muang / Tubkaek strip (quiet upmarket resorts). We have stayed in all four; here is how they compare, with specific hotels and what they cost.

Ao Nang: the practical first-timer base

Ao Nang is where most visitors should stay. The beachfront road has hundreds of restaurants, tour agencies, dive shops, and massage places, and every island tour in the province picks up here. The beach itself is average by Thai standards — you stay here for logistics, not for the sand.

Where to stay in Ao Nang:

  • Budget: Glur Krabi Glamping & Hostel — well-run dorms and tents about ten minutes’ walk from the beach, dorm beds from approximately ฿350–500 per night as of 2026. Wake Up Aonang is a solid flashpacker mid-point with private rooms from around ฿1,000–1,400.
  • Mid-range: Aonang Cliff Beach Resort sits on the hill above the strip with a pool overlooking the bay — doubles typically ฿2,000–3,200. Centara Anda Dhevi Resort & Spa, a short walk from Nopparat Thara beach, runs approximately ฿2,200–3,500.
  • Upper: Avani Ao Nang Cliff (the former cliff-top landmark at the centre of the strip) is the best location in town, usually ฿3,500–5,500 depending on season.

Avoid hotels more than 1.5 km up Route 4203 unless they run a shuttle — the walk to the beach in April heat is miserable.

Railay: the postcard, at a price

Railay is not an island, but the limestone cliffs cut it off from the road network, so everything arrives by longtail boat (approximately ฿100–150 per person from Ao Nang as of 2026). The reward is one of Thailand’s most photographed settings — Phra Nang Beach, the viewpoint, and world-class rock climbing.

Where to stay on Railay:

  • Budget: Railay Garden View Resort on the east side has simple fan bungalows from approximately ฿800–1,200. Genuine budget options are scarce — backpackers mostly stay in Tonsai, the next bay over, where bungalows start around ฿500.
  • Mid-range: Sand Sea Resort and Railay Bay Resort & Spa share the prime West Railay beachfront, typically ฿2,500–4,500 per night in high season.
  • Luxury: Rayavadee occupies the headland between Railay and Phra Nang beach — pavilion rooms start around ฿18,000–25,000 per night as of 2026. It is one of southern Thailand’s signature hotels.

The trade-off is real: restaurants are limited and pricier, ATMs are few, and rough seas can make the boat ride unpleasant in the May–October monsoon.

Krabi Town: cheap beds, no beach

Krabi Town is where the buses, ferries, and cheap guesthouses are. Pak-Up Hostel is the long-standing backpacker hub with dorms from approximately ฿250–350; The Brown Hotel offers clean modern doubles for around ฿800–1,000. The weekend Walking Street market is genuinely good for food. Stay a night if you arrive late or want the cheapest possible base — otherwise push on to the coast.

Klong Muang and Tubkaek: quiet luxury

Twenty minutes north-west of Ao Nang, this strip of calm beaches holds the province’s resort flagships with almost no town behind them. Dusit Thani Krabi Beach Resort runs approximately ฿4,000–6,500 per night; Phulay Bay, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve, starts around ฿15,000+ as of 2026. The Tubkaek beaches face the Hong Islands and the sunsets are the best in Krabi. You will need taxis or hotel shuttles for everything — this is a stay-put honeymoon base, not an exploring base.

Seasons and prices

Krabi’s high season runs November to April — dry, calm Andaman seas, and the prices above. In the May–October green season rates drop 30–50%, Railay’s boat ride gets bumpier, and some smaller resorts close, but the limestone scenery in the rain has its own appeal and the island tours still run on most days. Christmas to mid-January is peak: book Railay and the Klong Muang resorts two to three months ahead, as the good mid-range places sell out first.

Two budgeting notes from experience: Ao Nang restaurant prices are noticeably higher than Krabi Town (a pad thai that costs ฿60 at the Town night market is ฿120–180 on the beachfront road), and almost everything in Railay carries a 20–30% “boat premium” — stock up on water and sunscreen before you cross.

Getting in and around

Krabi International Airport has direct flights from Bangkok (80 minutes, approximately ฿1,000–2,500 as of 2026), plus seasonal international routes. From the airport: shuttle buses to Ao Nang for approximately ฿150 per person, or metered/fixed taxis around ฿600. White songthaews loop between Krabi Town and Ao Nang all day for approximately ฿60. For Railay, longtails leave from Ao Nang’s Nopparat Thara end (15 minutes) and from Krabi Town’s Chao Fah pier (45 minutes) — the boats wait until they have enough passengers, so allow slack.

How to choose

  • First visit, doing island tours: Ao Nang.
  • Climbers and scenery-first travellers: Railay (or Tonsai on a budget).
  • Overnight transit or rock-bottom budget: Krabi Town.
  • Honeymoon or resort holiday: Klong Muang / Tubkaek.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I stay in Ao Nang or Railay?
Ao Nang for convenience — restaurants, tour desks, pharmacies, and direct transport to the airport and islands. Railay for the setting — it is only reachable by longtail boat, which keeps it quieter, but you pay more for less and every errand involves a boat ride. Most first-time visitors are happier in Ao Nang with a day trip to Railay.
Is Krabi Town worth staying in?
Only for a night or two. It is the transport hub and the cheapest base in the province, with a good night market, but it has no beach. Ao Nang is 30–40 minutes away by songthaew (approximately ฿60 as of 2026).
How far is Krabi Airport from Ao Nang?
About 27 km — roughly 40 minutes by shuttle bus (approximately ฿150 per person) or 30 minutes by taxi (approximately ฿600 as of 2026).
