Where to Stay on Koh Samui: Chaweng, Lamai, Bophut, or Maenam
Koh Samui’s ring road is only 50 km around, but each stretch of coast has its own personality — party-central Chaweng, laid-back Lamai, boutique Bophut, local Maenam, and a south coast most visitors never see. The island skews more upmarket than Koh Phangan or Koh Tao next door, but every budget still fits somewhere. Here is the coast clockwise from the airport.
Chaweng: the main event
Chaweng is Samui’s longest and best beach — 7 km of genuinely white sand and swimmable water — and its busiest strip: malls, clubs, beach bars, and wall-to-wall resorts. Stay here for the beach and the nightlife; expect noise near the centre.
Where to stay in Chaweng:
- Budget: Lub d Koh Samui Chaweng Beach is the rare beachfront hostel — dorms approximately ฿500–700, privates from ฿1,800 as of 2026.
- Mid-range: Chaweng Cove Beach Resort, at the calmer southern end, runs approximately ฿2,200–3,200. Baan Samui Resort, mid-strip and beachfront, is typically ฿2,800–4,000.
- Luxury: Anantara Lawana, in gardens at the quieter north end, runs approximately ฿7,000–11,000. On Chaweng Noi — the separate small bay to the south — Vana Belle, a Luxury Collection Resort, starts around ฿12,000 as of 2026 and is one of the island’s best addresses.
Lamai: Chaweng’s relaxed younger sibling
Lamai, 15 minutes south, has a very good beach (rockier at the ends, lovely in the middle), a walkable town with a more easy-going bar scene, and prices roughly 20–30% below Chaweng. The Sunday night market on Lamai’s main street is one of the island’s best food evenings.
- Budget: New Hut Bungalows puts simple beachfront huts on the sand from approximately ฿600–900 — old-school Samui, increasingly rare.
- Mid-range: Pavilion Samui Villas & Resort, beachfront in the centre of Lamai, runs approximately ฿3,000–4,500.
- Upper: Rocky’s Boutique Resort, on its own coves just south of Lamai, runs approximately ฿5,500–8,500 as of 2026.
Bophut and Fisherman’s Village: boutique charm
Bophut is our pick for most couples and families. Its old teak shophouse street — Fisherman’s Village — holds the island’s best restaurant scene and a Friday walking-street market, and the beach, while narrower and coarser than Chaweng, is calm and pleasant. The airport is 10 minutes away, yet the flight path misses it.
- Budget/Mid: Smile House Resort, at the village crossroads with two pools, runs approximately ฿1,200–1,800 — the area’s best value.
- Mid-range: The Waterfront Boutique Hotel, beachfront at the village’s western end, runs approximately ฿2,500–3,500 including a notably good breakfast.
- Luxury: Anantara Bophut (from approximately ฿8,000) and the hilltop Six Senses Samui on the headland east of Bophut (from approximately ฿18,000 as of 2026) are the flagships.
Maenam: quiet value, best for long stays
Maenam’s 4 km beach faces Koh Phangan, with calm shallow water, almost no nightlife, and the island’s best accommodation value. The pier here runs boats to Koh Phangan’s Full Moon Party, so you can visit the chaos and sleep far from it.
- Budget: Shangrilah Bungalows and Moonhut Bungalows keep beachfront huts at approximately ฿700–1,200.
- Upper: Santiburi Koh Samui, an enormous beachfront estate with a Beach Club feel, runs approximately ฿9,000–14,000 as of 2026 — luxury without Chaweng’s bustle.
The south and west: hideaway country
From Laem Set around to Taling Ngam, Samui empties out — single resorts on quiet bays, sunset views to the Five Islands, and nothing within walking distance. This is honeymoon territory: Banyan Tree Samui (private-pool villas from approximately ฿14,000) on Lamai’s southern headland, and InterContinental Samui Baan Taling Ngam (from approximately ฿9,000 as of 2026) on the west coast with the island’s best sunsets. Rent a car or accept resort-restaurant prices.
Our verdict
Beach and nightlife: Chaweng. Balance of everything: Bophut. Budget beachfront: Maenam or Lamai’s north end. Seclusion: the south-west. Samui pairs naturally with its neighbours — most visitors add Koh Phangan or Koh Tao by ferry from Maenam or Nathon — and our island-hopping itinerary covers how to string them together. Frequently Asked Questions
- Which is the best beach on Koh Samui?
- Chaweng has the best sand and swimming but the most noise. For the balance most visitors want, Bophut combines a decent beach with the island's most charming village. Maenam wins for quiet and value.
- Where should couples stay on Koh Samui?
- Bophut for boutique charm near restaurants, or the south coast (Laem Set, Taling Ngam) for secluded resorts. Chaweng Noi — the small bay south of main Chaweng — splits the difference with quiet luxury ten minutes from the action.
- When is Koh Samui's rainy season?
- Samui's wettest months are October to December — the opposite pattern to Phuket and the Andaman coast. February to April is the driest, sunniest window, as of long-term averages.
