Surat Thani is the transit hub of the Gulf of Thailand - most visitors pass through it on their way to Koh Samui, Koh Phangan, or Koh Tao, without stopping to notice what surrounds it. That’s a genuine oversight. To the north is Khao Sok National Park, one of the oldest rainforest ecosystems in the world (older than the Amazon), with a vast flooded lake, limestone cliffs, and tree cover that shelters leopards, tapirs, and gibbons. The Tapi River runs through the city past fruit plantations and stilted villages. The Chaiya district, 60 km north, contains the oldest Buddhist temple in Thailand. Surat Thani repays a day’s attention before or after the islands.

For Nature Lovers
Khao Sok Jungle Day Trip with Lunch
The most popular reason to stop in Surat Thani rather than rushing to the islands: Khao Sok National Park sits approximately 1.5 hours northwest of town and protects 739 square kilometres of rainforest in the Surat Thani highlands. This jungle day trip from Surat Thani includes transport to the park, a guided trail through lowland rainforest where pitcher plants, rafflesia (the world’s largest flower, seasonal), and fig strangler vines are visible, swimming in Sok River, and lunch at a riverside hut.
Khao Sok is home to the clouded leopard, Malayan tapir, dusky langur, and white-handed gibbon. Wildlife sightings on a day walk are possible but not guaranteed - the park is more productive in early morning. If you want the forest without the crowd, this is the tour to book.
Duration: Full day | Price: from approximately $50 | Includes: guide, transport, lunch, park fee | Wildlife note: Gibbons are most active and audible at dawn - a dawn departure (06:00) significantly increases sighting chances
Klong Saeng Wildlife Sanctuary Boat Tour
Klong Saeng stretches from the eastern edge of Khao Sok National Park into the Ratchaprapa Reservoir, accessible from the western shore of the lake. The sanctuary protects contiguous forest with Khao Sok and harbours one of the highest densities of hornbill species in Thailand - the great hornbill, rhinoceros hornbill, and wreathed hornbill all occur here. This full-day boat tour travels by longtail to the Klong Saeng canal mouth, then by smaller boat into the forest corridor. Morning departures give the best chance of hornbill sightings.
Duration: Full day | Price: from approximately $60 | Includes: boat, guide, transport from Surat Thani | Best season: November–May for clear water levels; June–October brings heavy rain but lush vegetation
For Immersion Seekers

Khao Sok Cheow Lan Lake Raft House Overnight
Cheow Lan (Ratchaprapa Reservoir) was created in 1987 by damming the Klong Saeng River. The resulting lake covers 185 square kilometres and is surrounded by the dramatic limestone cliffs of Khao Sok on every side. Floating raft houses on the lake offer overnight stays with no electricity after dark, guided night kayaking among the karsts, and early morning canoeing when mist still sits in the cliff corridors.
This 2-day raft house tour from Surat Thani includes transport from Surat Thani or Khao Sok, all meals, accommodation in a floating raft house, guided kayaking, a cave swim, and a jungle trail on day two. The night on the lake - with no light pollution and the smell of forest on the water - is genuinely exceptional.
Duration: 2 days / 1 night | Price: from approximately $140 per person | Includes: all transport, meals, accommodation, guided activities | Booking tip: The best raft houses book 4–6 weeks in advance for November–February; walk-ins possible in the low season
For Adventure Seekers
Tham Nam Thalu Cave Tour, Khao Sok
One of the least-visited and most rewarding activities in Khao Sok: a wading cave tour through Tham Nam Thalu, a river cave system where a stream runs through 400 metres of underground passage. The route requires wading through waist-deep water, swimming short sections, and climbing over cave formations. The cave opens into several large chambers where bats roost and the ceiling shows ancient coral formations from when this limestone was seafloor.
This cave tour from Surat Thani includes transport, guide, headlamps, and life jackets where needed. Not suitable for those with claustrophobia or a fear of water. Duration is a full day with transit included.
Duration: Full day | Price: from approximately $55 | Includes: transport, guide, equipment | Fitness note: Moderate - requires comfort with wading chest-deep water and confined spaces
For First-Timers and Families
Tapi River Cruise and Floating Market
The Tapi River runs through central Surat Thani to the Gulf of Thailand, lined by mangroves, fruit orchards, and stilted houses. A 3-hour boat cruise on the river takes in the riverfront morning market at Ban Don, where fishing boats unload overnight catches at dawn, and the smaller floating market at Phun Phin, where vendors sell local fruit, smoked fish, and fresh coconut products from boats.
This is an easy, unhurried introduction to Surat Thani’s riverine culture - more productive as a morning activity than an afternoon one.
Duration: 3 hours | Price: from approximately $20 | Includes: boat, guide | Best time: 07:00 departure for the fresh market activity
For Culture and History
Monkey Cave and Chaiya Temple Day Trip
Wat Suan Mok Phalaram in Chaiya district, 60 km north of Surat Thani, is the most significant Buddhist site in southern Thailand - built on a 1,300-year-old Srivijaya foundation and considered the oldest temple in the country. The site contains a Srivijaya-era museum with artefacts from the maritime empire that controlled trade between India, China, and the Malay Peninsula from the 7th to 13th centuries.
On the way, this full-day culture trip stops at the Khao Krachom Monkey Cave - a hill temple where hundreds of wild macaques are fed daily and the cliff face contains Thai script carved into rock by monks. The combination of ancient history and wildlife makes this one of the more interesting cultural day trips in southern Thailand.
Duration: Full day | Price: from approximately $35 | Includes: guide, transport | Srivijaya museum note: Closed Mondays; confirm at booking
For Foodies
Surat Thani Night Market Food Walk
Surat Thani sits at the heart of southern Thailand’s most productive fruit region - durian, mangosteen, rambutan, and longan are all grown within 30 km of the city and arrive at the night market in staggering volumes during the season (May–July for durian, June–September for mangosteen). The night market at Talat Kaset 1 and the walking street near the clock tower are the main food hubs.
This 3-hour night market walk includes tastings of southern Thai dishes - khao yam (rice salad with toasted coconut and kaffir lime), gaeng tai pla (fish kidney curry, an acquired taste), and moo yang (grilled pork with local dipping sauce) - plus seasonal fruit tasting with a guide who explains each variety.
Duration: 3 hours | Price: from approximately $18 | Includes: guide, food tastings | Fruit season note: The best durian in Thailand comes from Surat Thani province; the peak season is May–July
