Koh Tao has more dive schools per square kilometre than almost anywhere in the world and is consistently ranked one of the best-value places on earth to get a PADI or SSI Open Water certification. Around 100,000 divers qualify here annually, drawn by warm water (28–30°C year-round), visibility averaging 10–25 metres, and prices that are roughly half what the same certification costs in Europe or Australia. Beyond diving courses, the island offers snorkel day trips to the famous Koh Nang Yuan sandbar, seasonal whale shark encounters, and night dives over bioluminescent reefs.
We have mapped the top Koh Tao experiences by type below. Prices are approximate in THB as of 2026; check at booking as rates shift with season and group size.

For First-Time Divers
PADI Open Water Course
The PADI Open Water is the world’s most recognised entry-level diving certification and Koh Tao is the most affordable place to earn it. A standard course takes 3–4 days and covers theory, confined water skills in a pool or shallow bay, and four open-water qualifying dives. Prices from the island’s 60 licensed schools run approximately THB 9,000–12,000 all-in, including course materials, equipment hire, and the PADI certification fee.
Duration: 3–4 days | Price: from approximately THB 9,000 | Includes: theory sessions (e-learning or classroom), confined water skills, 4 open-water dives, equipment, PADI certification card | Best schools by reputation: Ban’s Diving, Big Blue Diving, Crystal Dive
When choosing a school, ask about the maximum instructor-to-student ratio for open-water dives — the standard is 4:1 but the best schools maintain 2:1. Smaller ratios mean more personal attention and a faster progression through skills.
SSI Open Water Course
The SSI (Scuba Schools International) certification is equally recognised globally and uses a fully digital study system. Most Koh Tao dive schools offering PADI also run SSI at comparable prices (approximately THB 9,000–11,500). The dive experience in open water is identical — the difference is primarily the certification body’s ecosystem of apps and digital logbooks.
Duration: 3–4 days | Price: from approximately THB 9,000 | Includes: digital theory access, confined water training, 4 open-water dives, equipment, digital certification
For Certified Divers
Fun Dive Day Trips
Koh Tao has around 25 dive sites within 30 minutes of the main pier. A two-dive day trip typically covers one shallow-to-mid-depth site and one deeper or more challenging site, with surface intervals on the boat. Popular two-dive combinations include Chumphon Pinnacle (14–40m, schooling fish and seasonal whale sharks) with Southwest Pinnacle, or Japanese Gardens (shallow, high fish density) paired with the HTMS Sattakut wreck (18–30m, a decommissioned navy vessel sunk as artificial reef).
Duration: Full day (morning departure, back by early afternoon) | Price: from approximately THB 1,500 for 2 dives | Includes: boat, tanks, weights, guide; wetsuit hire additional approximately THB 200 | Best for: certified divers who want variety without committing to a multi-day course
Night Diving
After dark on Koh Tao, coral polyps extend their feeding tentacles and nocturnal species emerge — octopus, moray eels, lionfish, and sleeping parrotfish visible in their mucus cocoons. Bioluminescence is common on nights with little moon. Most schools run night dives from their house reefs at Japanese Gardens or Shark Bay (Ao Leuk), departing around 19:00.
Duration: 2–3 hours (dive itself is approximately 50 minutes) | Price: from approximately THB 1,200 per dive | Includes: torch, tank, weights, guide | Minimum certification: Open Water | Note: inform the dive operator if this is your first night dive — buoyancy control is critical; an Advanced or a night dive specialty is preferable
Advanced Open Water Course
Completing Advanced Open Water unlocks deeper dive sites (to 30m), night diving certification, and improved navigation skills. Koh Tao’s varied topography makes it an ideal environment — the two-day course here typically includes a deep dive at Chumphon Pinnacle and a navigation dive at Japanese Gardens or Shark Bay. Cost approximately THB 7,500–9,000 including five adventure dives.
For Snorkellers
Koh Nang Yuan Day Trip
Koh Nang Yuan is a trio of small islands connected by a white sand spit, 15 minutes by longtail from Koh Tao’s main pier. The snorkelling at Japanese Gardens reef — between Koh Tao and Koh Nang Yuan — is the best accessible from the water’s surface anywhere near the island: dense fish populations, turtles in the morning hours, and clear, shallow water (2–8 metres) suitable for all swimming abilities. Entry to Koh Nang Yuan: approximately THB 100, payable on arrival.
Duration: Half day or full day | Price: from approximately THB 500 (longtail) | Includes: longtail transport, snorkelling gear approximately THB 100 extra to hire on site | Best time: arrive before 10:00 when day-trip boats begin arriving in numbers; the viewpoint hike from the spit (20 minutes) has the best light in the morning
Whale Shark Snorkel Tour
Koh Tao is one of the most reliable places in Thailand to snorkel alongside whale sharks — the world’s largest fish, filter-feeders that are harmless to swimmers. Seasonal encounters occur most frequently at Chumphon Pinnacle and Southwest Pinnacle between February and April, with sightings also in November and January. Operators run dedicated “whale shark watch” half-day snorkel boats from February to April when conditions are right.
Duration: Half day | Price: from approximately THB 800 | Note: whale shark sightings are never guaranteed — ethical operators never chase or harass the animals; choose an operator that follows DNP guidelines | Best months: February to April for highest probability; October–January for clearest overall visibility at all sites
For Freedivers
Freediving Introduction Course
Freediving — breath-hold diving without scuba equipment — has grown rapidly at Koh Tao in the past five years. Several schools now run AIDA- or SSI Freediving-certified beginner courses that take students from pool breath-hold basics to open-water dives reaching 10–20 metres on a single breath in two days. Prerequisites: basic swimming ability only, no diving experience required.
Duration: 2 days | Price: from approximately THB 5,500 | Includes: theory, pool session, 4+ open-water freediving sessions, certification | Best schools: Apnea Total, Blue Immersion
Practical Information
Getting to Koh Tao: High-speed catamaran from Koh Samui (1.5 hours, approximately THB 500) or Koh Phangan (1 hour, approximately THB 300). Night ferry from Surat Thani (6 hours, approximately THB 600 with cabin bunk). No airport.
Best season for diving: February to September is consistently good. October and November bring the northeast monsoon — some dive sites are accessible but open-water conditions can be choppy; inner reef sites remain diveable. December to January is calmer again.
What to bring: Rash guard or wetsuit (provided by most schools), reef-safe sunscreen (required in all marine protected areas), motion sickness tablets if prone (the boat to Chumphon Pinnacle involves open water), and a waterproof bag for valuables.
Cancellations: Dive schools will cancel or modify trips in rough sea conditions. Most operators offer full refunds or rescheduling when cancellations are weather-driven. Check operator cancellation policy before booking, particularly in October–November.
