Koh Lanta vs Koh Phi Phi: Which Krabi Island Is Right for You?
Koh Phi Phi and Koh Lanta both sit in the Andaman Sea off the Krabi coast, and both are accessible by ferry from Krabi Town or Phuket. There, the similarities end. Koh Phi Phi Don — the inhabited Phi Phi island — is famous, photogenic, and overrun with day-trippers and backpackers. Koh Lanta is longer, flatter, quieter, and a world apart in atmosphere. If you understand what each island is actually about, the choice becomes easy.

The Fundamental Difference
Koh Phi Phi Don is small — about 3 km × 1 km at the main beach — and the entire island economy is focused on a single strip (Tonsai Village) that packs bars, restaurants, tattoo parlours, souvenir shops, and beach bungalows into a narrow neck of land between two bays. Day-tripper boats arrive from Phuket and Krabi throughout the morning and afternoon, sometimes 50+ boats in a single day during peak season. The island is genuinely beautiful but struggles under the weight of its own popularity.
Koh Lanta is 27 km long and mostly undeveloped in its southern half. The west coast has a succession of beaches — Klong Dao, Long Beach, Klong Khong, Klong Nin, Kantiang Bay — each with its own character and varying degrees of development. The interior is forested hills and a national park at the southern tip. The town of Ban Sala Dan in the north is a working fishing village, not a party strip.
Costs
Koh Phi Phi is overpriced relative to quality. Beach bungalows in Tonsai Village start at THB 1,000–1,800 for basic rooms without air conditioning. Mid-range hotels with air conditioning and pool start at THB 2,500–3,500. Restaurants charge Bangkok or Phuket prices — green curry for THB 200–300, pad thai for THB 150–200. The island has no infrastructure to offset costs (no ATMs on some beaches, expensive speedboat tours).
Koh Lanta is significantly better value. Guesthouses on Long Beach or Klong Dao run THB 700–1,200 for a decent room with fan or air conditioning. Boutique resorts on Klong Nin or Kantiang Bay start at THB 1,500–2,500. Restaurants are 20–30% cheaper than Phi Phi — a large pad thai is THB 90–120 at local spots on the beach road. Daily budget spend sits around THB 1,200–1,800 compared to THB 1,800–2,800 on Phi Phi.
Beaches
Koh Phi Phi has Thailand’s most photogenic beaches. Maya Bay (Koh Phi Phi Leh) was temporarily closed for environmental recovery and now has controlled access — longtail tours cost THB 300–500 per person from Tonsai. The water inside Maya Bay is extraordinary — shallow, turquoise, enclosed by cliffs. Loh Samah Bay on the same island is a snorkelling highlight. Tonsai Bay, where most visitors stay, is functional but not the island’s most beautiful.
Koh Lanta’s beaches are gentler and more accessible. Klong Dao (north of the island) is the longest beach — 3 km of soft sand, calm water, good for swimming. Long Beach (Hat Phra Ae) is the main backpacker strip with beach bars and a sociable atmosphere without being loud. Klong Nin Beach is narrower but calmer, with excellent snorkelling in the bay. Kantiang Bay at the south is the island’s most dramatic — wide, curved, forest-backed, and home to the Pimalai resort.
Diving and Snorkelling
Koh Phi Phi has excellent snorkelling by longtail or speedboat. Hin Klang, Shark Point, and the water around Koh Bida Nok have reliable reef encounters. Day dive trips from Phi Phi visit these sites plus Koh Haa and Hin Daeng if you push further south. Most dive shops charge THB 2,500–3,500 for a two-tank dive.
Koh Lanta is the departure point for some of the Andaman’s best diving. Hin Daeng and Hin Muang (45–60 minutes by speedboat) are two of Thailand’s top dive sites — Hin Daeng regularly has whale shark encounters, manta rays, and exceptional coral at depth. Koh Haa is excellent for beginners and intermediate divers. Dives from Koh Lanta cost THB 2,800–4,000 for two tanks including the longer boat journey.
Nightlife
Koh Phi Phi has a real nightlife scene concentrated along Tonsai’s beach road. Slinky Bar, Dojo Bar, and Ibiza Bar are the main venues — fire shows, cocktail buckets (THB 150–180), and a young crowd until 2am or later. The scene is compact and can become very crowded, particularly around the Full Moon Party on Koh Phangan (which draws people here for the pre-party).
Koh Lanta has almost no nightlife. A few beach bars on Long Beach play music and close by midnight. Rasta Baby Bar is the closest thing to a late venue. Travellers seeking parties should choose Phi Phi without hesitation — or use Lanta as a recovery destination after Phi Phi nights.
Accommodation
Koh Lanta has Thailand’s best mid-to-luxury island accommodation outside of Phuket. Pimalai Resort and Spa at Kantiang Bay (THB 6,500–12,000 per night) is one of southern Thailand’s finest resorts — multiple pools, sea views, jungle-to-beach positioning. Layana Resort at Klong Nin (THB 4,000–7,500) is adults-only, beautiful, and excellent value at its level. The Narima Bungalow Resort (THB 1,800–2,800 on Klong Dao) is solid mid-range.
Koh Phi Phi: Phi Phi Island Village Beach Resort on Laem Tong Beach (north tip, accessible by boat, THB 4,000–7,000) is the one genuinely good luxury option. Tonsai Village has almost nothing equivalent — Phi Phi The Beach Resort (THB 2,500–4,000) and Phi Phi Villa Resort (THB 2,000–3,500) are adequate but not impressive.
Getting There
Koh Phi Phi is reached by high-speed ferry from Phuket’s Rassada Pier (1.5 hours, THB 600–800) or from Krabi (1.5 hours, THB 450–600). No cars exist on the island — all transport is on foot or by longtail.
Koh Lanta is reached by ferry from Krabi Town (2.5 hours, THB 450–600), from Phi Phi (1.5 hours, THB 500–700, seasonal), or by minivan from Krabi Airport via the car ferry crossing at Ban Hua Hin (2 hours total, THB 400–600). Scooters and cars can be rented on the island.
Verdict
Choose Koh Phi Phi if you want the most dramatic Andaman scenery, a social backpacker atmosphere, and easy access to the famous beaches — accept that it will be crowded and overpriced for what you get.
Choose Koh Lanta if you want a relaxed pace, better beach-to-crowd ratio, families or couples in mind, genuinely excellent diving access, and 25–30% lower costs.
The best Andaman coast trip combines both: arrive at Phi Phi for 2 nights of dramatic scenery and socialising, then escape to Koh Lanta for 4+ nights of actual relaxation.

Frequently Asked Questions
- Is Koh Lanta or Koh Phi Phi better for families?
- Koh Lanta is significantly better for families. The island has a relaxed pace, long beaches with calm water in the northern sections, good family-friendly resorts, and almost no party scene. Koh Phi Phi Don is dominated by young backpackers and its main beach area (Tonsai) is loud and crowded — not ideal with young children. Koh Lanta's Long Beach and Klong Dao Beach have calm water, shade, and a gentler atmosphere. Some resorts like Pimalai and Layana are specifically built around peaceful family holidays.
- Can you visit both Koh Lanta and Koh Phi Phi in one trip?
- Yes — this is a common itinerary from the Krabi area. High-speed ferries connect Phi Phi and Koh Lanta in about 1.5 hours (THB 500–700 per person, seasonal). A typical route: fly into Krabi, take the ferry to Phi Phi for 2–3 nights, then continue to Koh Lanta for 3–4 nights before returning to Krabi by ferry. This covers the most dramatic scenery (Phi Phi) and the most relaxed beach experience (Koh Lanta) in a single Andaman coast loop.
- When is the ferry season between Koh Phi Phi and Koh Lanta?
- The direct high-speed ferry between Koh Phi Phi and Koh Lanta operates from approximately November to April, aligned with the Andaman dry season when sea conditions allow. Outside these months (May to October), direct services are reduced or suspended. In the shoulder and wet season, you would need to go via Krabi Town — a longer journey. Always check current ferry schedules with operators like Satun Pakbara or Anda Daman when travelling outside peak season.
