Things to do here

The top-rated tours and activities here — all with instant confirmation and free cancellation on most bookings.

Wat Rong Khun (White Temple)

13km south of Chiang Rai city. The most distinctive contemporary Buddhist temple in Thailand — a privately owned site by artist Chalermchai Kositpipat, begun in 1997 and still being expanded. The all-white exterior inlaid with mirrored glass represents the purity and wisdom of the Buddha. The approach bridge crosses a reflecting pool filled with outstretched plaster hands representing souls in suffering.

The interior (no photography allowed) contains murals that mix Buddhist symbolism with contemporary cultural references — a Kositpipat signature that generates both admiration and debate. The gold building across the grounds contrasts deliberately with the white temple and functions as a toilet block and shop.

Entry: free. Parking: ฿20. Best before 9am or after 3pm to avoid the peak tour group arrival.

Wat Rong Suea Ten (Blue Temple)

3km from the city centre. A more recently built temple (2016) painted in vivid indigo blue with gold and white detailing. Less famous than the White Temple but visually striking and far less crowded. The interior has a large white Buddha image surrounded by painted murals. Active temple — respectful dress required. Entry: free.

Baan Dam (Black House/Museum)

13km north of the city. The life’s work of artist Thawan Duchanee — a compound of dark wooden structures housing his collection of animal bones, pelts, horns, and art. The effect is deliberately unsettling: a black crocodile skin on a throne, buffalo skulls covering a ceiling, taxidermy large mammals in dim interiors. Whether it’s art or excess is a question visitors bring their own answer to. Open 9am–5pm. Entry: ฿80.

Wat Huay Pla Kang

8km north of the city. A large white Buddha figure (69 metres tall) and nine-storey pagoda — less photographed than the White Temple but the views from the upper pagoda levels are better. A working temple with active worshippers. Entry to the pagoda interior: ฿40. Best light in the morning.

Golden Triangle

65km north of Chiang Rai. The point where Thailand, Myanmar, and Laos meet at the Mekong and Ruak rivers. The Thai viewing area is at Sob Ruak village — a viewpoint, a large golden Buddha, and a heavily commercialised market. The visual appeal is the rivers meeting, visible from the bank.

Hall of Opium Museum (10km west at Doi Tung) — A serious museum documenting the history of opium production and the Golden Triangle trade, established by the Mae Fah Luang Foundation. Thoughtfully designed, covers the full history from poppy origins to the modern counter-narcotics campaigns. Entry: ฿200. Worth the visit for context.

Boat trip to Laos — From Sob Ruak, longtail boats cross to Don Sao island (Laos side). Day visas are available at the island, which has a market selling Lao goods. Return trip: ฿50 per person.

Saturday Night Market (Thanon Thanalai)

The best thing to do in Chiang Rai city in the evening. The walking street market on Thanalai Road runs every Saturday from 4pm to midnight. Less touristy than Chiang Mai’s equivalent, with more locally made handicrafts, live folk music, and street food. The Akha hill tribe jewellery stalls are particularly good. The clock tower at the end of the street (also a Kositpipat design) lights up with a music and light show at 7pm, 8pm, and 9pm.
