Pattaya Day Trips & Tours: Ko Larn, Elephant Sanctuary, Nong Nooch Gardens

Pattaya’s reputation as a beach resort is somewhat earned, but the city’s real advantage is its position as a launchpad. Within 30–60 minutes you can reach coral islands in the Gulf of Thailand, botanical gardens the size of a small town, ethical elephant parks, and a network of marine sanctuaries that most international visitors never find. The day trips out of Pattaya are, frankly, better than most of what’s on the Pattaya beachfront.

Ko Larn (Coral Island): the most popular day trip

Ko Larn sits 7.5 km offshore and is Pattaya’s most accessible escape. The island has good sand, cleaner water than the mainland, and a laid-back pace that contrasts sharply with central Pattaya.

Ferry options:

Beaches: Tawaen Beach is the main hub - busy, with sunbed rentals (฿100–200 each), seafood restaurants, and water sports operators. Samae Beach is similar. For quieter sand, follow the songthaew track to Hat Nual or Tien Beach (songthaews on the island cost ฿20–30 per person between beaches).

Snorkelling: Basic equipment rents for ฿100–150 at the beach. Best spots are off the southern tip of the island and around the marine buoys - visibility averages 3–6 metres depending on weather.

Marine Park and coral reef tours

Pattaya Marine Sanctuary - A designated no-fishing, no-anchoring zone approximately 2 km from Ko Larn. Several licensed dive operators and snorkel tour boats access the sanctuary’s coral reef, which has recovered notably since the protected zone was established. Half-day snorkel tours from Pattaya harbour: ฿800–1,200 (USD 22–33) per person including boat and equipment.

Ko Sak and Ko Krok - Two smaller islands closer to Pattaya (15 minutes by speedboat) popular with diving operators. Visibility is typically lower than the outer islands but suitable for beginner snorkellers and divers. Open Water certification courses run by Mermaid’s Dive Centre (Jomtien Beach Road) and Dive Pattaya are priced approximately ฿9,000–12,000 (USD 250–333) for the 3–4 day course as of 2026.

Nong Nooch Tropical Garden

Located 15 km south of Pattaya on Sukhumvit Road (Highway 3), Nong Nooch is a legitimate botanical destination that has grown into one of Southeast Asia’s most extensive garden complexes.

What to see: The cycad garden alone justifies the visit - it contains one of the world’s largest collections of cycas, zamia, and encephalartos species. The French formal garden (topiary elephants and symmetrical hedges) is frequently photographed. The dinosaur park and Stonehenge replica are family-oriented additions that suit children. Plan for 2–3 hours minimum.

Getting there from Pattaya: Songthaew on Sukhumvit Road (฿20–40), taxi (฿200–300 one-way), or organised tour from hotels (from ฿400 per person including transport).

Elephant Jungle Sanctuary Pattaya

Located approximately 20 km north of central Pattaya towards Sri Racha, Elephant Jungle Sanctuary operates on a no-riding, no-shows basis. Visitors observe resident elephants in forest enclosures, participate in feeding, and learn about each animal’s rescue story.

• Half-day visit: approximately ฿2,500–3,000 (USD 70–83) including hotel transfer and lunch
• Morning programme (7am–12pm) is recommended over afternoon - elephants are more active

Cultural sites within reach

Sanctuary of Truth (Prasat Sut Ja-Tum) - A hand-carved wooden temple on Naklua Beach, 3 km north of central Pattaya, under continuous construction since 1981. Entry ฿500 (USD 14) as of 2026. The building’s ambition - entirely wooden and 105 metres tall - is impressive and the craftsmanship is genuine. Elephant rides offered on-site; skip them.

Wat Yansangwararam - A large complex 12 km south of Pattaya with a Chinese-style pavilion, garden lake, and 40-metre seated Buddha. Free entry. Less visited than Nong Nooch and peaceful by comparison.

• Ko Larn day trips are best on weekdays - Thai holiday weekends bring mainland crowds that fill the island.
• Book elephant sanctuaries 1–2 days in advance; morning slots fill quickly.
• The Sanctuary of Truth restricts entry after 4pm - arrive by 3pm to have sufficient time.
