Chiang Mai Airport Transfers | The Thailand Guides

Chiang Mai International Airport (IATA: CNX) is one of the most straightforward airport transfers in Thailand. The terminal sits barely 3km southwest of the Old City moat - on a clear run, you can be at your guesthouse in 10 minutes. The compact geography means all the major options are affordable, and there is no single “must-take” transport mode the way the Airport Rail Link dominates Bangkok.

Airport Layout

CNX has one main terminal with domestic and international wings. Taxi and Grab pickup is immediately outside the ground-floor arrivals exit. There is an official metered taxi rank to the right as you exit, and a Grab pickup zone slightly further along. Red songthaews (shared pickup trucks) congregate near the exit but are more commonly used for onward travel within the city than direct airport runs.

Metered Taxi - Most Reliable Option

Chiang Mai Airport operates licensed metered taxis from a staffed rank outside arrivals. Unlike Phuket, these are genuine metered cabs - the meter starts at approximately THB 35 and adds THB 2 per km. There is a THB 20 airport surcharge added to the final meter reading.

Typical metered fares (as of 2026):

To the Old City / Tha Phae Gate area: approximately THB 80–120 (8–12 minutes)
To Nimman Road (Nimmanhaemin): approximately THB 70–100 (7–10 minutes)
To Night Bazaar / Riverside: approximately THB 100–140 (10–15 minutes)
To Maya Mall / Nimman Soi 13: approximately THB 80–110 (8–12 minutes)

These are low fares by any standard. Even adding the airport surcharge and a small tip, a taxi from CNX to the Old City costs well under THB 200.

Do not accept offers from touts inside the terminal - wait for the official metered rank outside.

Grab - Easy and Transparent

Grab operates at CNX and is often the preferred option for first-time visitors who want price certainty before getting in. Fares from the airport to the Old City run approximately THB 80–150 depending on demand and time of day (as of 2026). Peak morning and evening periods see mild surge pricing, but Chiang Mai traffic is far less congested than Bangkok or Phuket.

You will need data connectivity to use Grab - an eSIM for Thailand or a local SIM purchased at the airport (AIS and DTAC have counters in the terminal) gives you this from the moment you land.

The Grab pickup zone is a short walk from arrivals - follow the signs or ask airport staff. Response times are typically 3–7 minutes.

Red Songthaew - Cheapest Option

Red songthaews (daeng) are the backbone of Chiang Mai’s local transport. These shared pickup trucks with bench seating run fixed and semi-fixed routes around the city for approximately THB 30–50 per person for short hops.

From the airport, red songthaews do not run a scheduled service, but drivers congregate outside arrivals and will offer to take you to the Old City or Nimman for a negotiated flat fare - typically THB 60–100 per person depending on destination and group size. This is only marginally cheaper than a metered taxi, and requires more negotiation, so most travellers opt for the taxi rank.

Songthaews are excellent once you are in the city and want to explore without the cost of repeated Grab bookings.

Private Transfer - Groups and Early/Late Flights

For groups of three or more, families with luggage, or anyone arriving on an early morning or late-night flight, a pre-booked private transfer makes the most sense economically and practically.

Operators including Kiwitaxi, Welcome Pickups and GetTransfer offer standard sedan transfers from CNX to the Old City from approximately THB 300–500 (as of 2026). Given the short distance, the price premium over a metered taxi is small - often THB 200–300 - in exchange for a named driver waiting at arrivals with a sign and no need to navigate the taxi queue after a long flight.

For trips further afield - Doi Inthanon, Pai, Chiang Rai - private drivers can also be arranged for full-day excursions. These are typically negotiated directly with a hotel concierge or day-tour operators, and run approximately THB 1,500–2,500 for a day trip (as of 2026).

Getting to Chiang Rai and Pai from CNX

If CNX is not your final destination but a transit point north or west, the easiest options are:

To Chiang Rai: Shared minivans depart from Chiang Mai’s Arcade Bus Terminal (15–20 minutes from the airport by taxi or Grab, THB 100–140). Minivan fares to Chiang Rai are approximately THB 150–180 per person; journey time is 3–3.5 hours. Public green buses are cheaper but slower.

To Pai: Minivans depart from Arcade Bus Terminal approximately every hour from early morning. Fare approximately THB 150 per person; journey time is 3–3.5 hours via Route 1095, which has 762 curves. Not recommended if you are prone to motion sickness.

To Chiang Rai or Pai by private transfer: A private driver from the airport directly to Pai runs approximately THB 2,000–2,500 - more convenient if you have significant luggage or a group.

Hiring a Car from CNX

Several international and local hire companies have counters in the arrivals hall, including Budget, Hertz and Thai Rent A Car. Chiang Mai’s Old City is compact and walkable, so a car is most useful for day trips rather than navigating within the moat.

Book in advance through GetRentacar for the best rates. An international driving licence is required. Note that parking inside the Old City, particularly near popular temples on weekends, can be challenging.

Practical Tips

CNX is very close to the city. Even a worst-case traffic scenario adds only 10–15 minutes to any journey. Unlike Bangkok, there is no need to stress about airport transfer timing.
Nimman is quieter than the Old City for arrivals. If you want modern cafes, co-working spaces and good restaurants from day one, Nimman Road is an excellent first base - and it is the closest major area to the airport.
Night markets run late. If you arrive in the evening, Sunday Walking Street (Wualai Road) and the Night Bazaar are within easy taxi distance of the airport.
Night flights from CNX: Several domestic routes use early morning departures (05:00–06:00). The airport itself opens early and the road is quiet before 07:00 - a taxi to the airport at this hour takes under 10 minutes from the Old City.
