Koh Phangan Beaches Guide: Beyond Had Rin

Quiet bay and palm trees on Koh Phangan's north coast, Gulf of Thailand

Koh Phangan beaches overview

Koh Phangan has more beach variety than its Full Moon Party reputation suggests. Had Rin (the party beach) occupies the southeast tip; the rest of the island has a range of bays from completely undeveloped to mid-range resort. The north and northeast coasts — Thong Nai Pan, Haad Khuat — are the most beautiful and least visited parts of the island.

Had Rin (Southeast tip)

Two beaches separated by a small headland:

Had Rin Nok (Sunrise Beach) — The Full Moon Party beach. On non-party nights it’s a pleasant small cove — coral sand, clear-ish water, a strip of bars and restaurants above the tide line. On Full Moon nights it becomes one of the most crowded places in Thailand. The southern end of the beach (away from the party infrastructure) is cleaner during the day.

Had Rin Nai (Sunset Beach) — The calmer side of the headland. Less developed, more sheltered, with a different crowd. Better for swimming on a regular day.

The Had Rin area is more developed than most of the island — significant accommodation, ATMs, pharmacies, and food options. Getting there from Thong Sala pier: songthaew (฿100) or boat (฿80, faster).

Thong Nai Pan (Northeast coast)

Two connected bays (Thong Nai Pan Noi and Yai) accessible by a winding mountain road from Thong Sala (30–40 minutes by scooter). One of the finest beaches in the Gulf of Thailand — clear water, white sand, backed by forested hillside, with a small village of guesthouses, restaurants, and dive shops.

The road is steep and has switchbacks — manageable by experienced scooter rider but not recommended for beginners. Songthaew service runs when available (฿100, departs irregularly).

Thong Nai Pan Noi — The smaller southern bay. Slightly more sheltered, calmer water. Most of the accommodation is here.

Thong Nai Pan Yai — The larger bay. Better beach length, slightly less infrastructure.

Both bays are an excellent alternative to Had Rin — similar beauty but completely different atmosphere.

Haad Yao (West coast)

A medium-sized beach on the mid-west coast, 10km from Thong Sala. Calm water, good swimming, a handful of bungalow guesthouses. The low-key atmosphere attracts longer-stay visitors. Songthaew from Thong Sala: ฿80.

Haad Chao Phao (Northwest)

Slightly north of Haad Yao. Good sunset position, calm water. Several beach bars with beanbag seating and evening bonfires during high season.

Haad Salad

A small, sheltered bay on the north coast with exceptionally clear, calm water. Some coral accessible by snorkelling from the beach’s north end. One of the island’s better snorkel spots without needing a boat. A few bungalow guesthouses.

Haad Khuat (Bottle Beach)

Only accessible by longtail from Haad Salad or Chalok Lam (฿80–100 per person) — no road access. A completely isolated bay with no road, no shops beyond one basic restaurant, and one small guesthouse. The water is clear, the beach is narrow but pristine, and the only people there are those who made the effort to arrive by boat.

For those who want a day of complete quiet away from the rest of the island, Bottle Beach is the destination.

Practical swimming notes

  • West coast beaches (Haad Yao, Haad Chao Phao) are calmer in the Gulf’s regular conditions
  • East coast (Thong Nai Pan) gets more exposure to Gulf swell during the northeast monsoon (October–November)
  • Had Rin’s Sunrise Beach can have Portuguese man-of-war and other stinging jellyfish — check with locals before swimming
  • Songthaew service is irregular to the outer beaches — confirm return options before committing

Frequently Asked Questions

Which is the best beach on Koh Phangan?
Thong Nai Pan Noi (northeast coast) is widely considered the best beach on the island — a near-circular sheltered bay with white sand and clear water, away from the Full Moon Party scene. It takes about 1 hour by songthaew from Thong Sala on a partially unpaved road. Haad Salad (northwest) is the best sunset beach.
Are the beaches near Hat Rin good?
Hat Rin Nok (Sunrise Beach) — the Full Moon Party beach — is wide and sandy but heavily developed. Hat Rin Nai on the other side of the headland is quieter but unremarkable. The best beaches are elsewhere: Thong Nai Pan in the northeast, Haad Yao and Haad Salad on the west coast.
