Where to Stay on Koh Phangan: Best Areas and Hotels
Koh Phangan is Thailand’s Full Moon Party island — but spend a week here and you quickly realise it is two completely different islands depending on where you stay. The south, particularly Haad Rin beach, exists almost entirely for the monthly party and the travellers who build their itinerary around it. The north and west coasts are quieter than almost anything on Koh Samui, with long stretches of sand and clear water that see a fraction of the visitors. Choosing your beach is choosing your entire Koh Phangan experience.
Haad Rin: Full Moon Party ground zero
Haad Rin sits on the southern tip of the island — a 15-minute songthaew ride from the Thong Sala ferry pier. The beach is split into two bays: Haad Rin Nok (Sunrise Beach), where the party takes place, and Haad Rin Nai (Sunset Beach) on the other side, which is significantly quieter. Outside Full Moon Party week, Haad Rin is actually a relatively relaxed beach town with good restaurants and clear water for snorkelling.
Where to stay in Haad Rin:
- Budget: Same Same But Different, a long-running hostel on Haad Rin’s main street, has dorms from approximately ฿250–400 and private rooms from ฿700 (outside party week) as of 2026. Prices at least double for Full Moon dates.
- Mid-range: Tommy Resort, directly on Sunrise Beach, runs approximately ฿1,500–2,800 for beachfront fan or air-conditioned rooms. Rin Beach Resort, also beachfront, is typically ฿2,000–3,500.
- Upper: Seaview Haadrin Resort has the most comfortable rooms in the Haad Rin area, from approximately ฿3,000–5,000, with a pool and beach access on the calmer Sunset Beach side.
Thong Nai Pan: the north-coast alternative
Two connected bays on the northeast coast — Thong Nai Pan Noi and Thong Nai Pan Yai — form Koh Phangan’s most beautiful area. The road access from Thong Sala is genuinely rough (sealed for most of it now but steep and winding), which kept development slow and has kept the atmosphere calm. These are the best beaches on the island for swimming and snorkelling.
- Budget: Nice Beach Resort on Thong Nai Pan Noi has fan bungalows from approximately ฿600–1,000 with direct beach access.
- Mid-range: Longtail Beach Resort, set in gardens on Thong Nai Pan Noi, runs approximately ฿2,000–3,500 for air-conditioned rooms. Dolphin Bay Resort on Thong Nai Pan Yai is typically ฿1,500–2,800.
- Luxury: Panviman Resort, on the hillside between the two bays, has private-pool villas from approximately ฿5,500–10,000 as of 2026 — one of the island’s best views and one of its few genuinely upmarket properties.
Chaloklum: north coast fishing village
Chaloklum village sits on the north coast, about 30 minutes from Thong Sala by songthaew. It retains a real fishing-village character with local restaurants, a calm bay, and easy boat access to Koh Ma — a small island connected to Koh Phangan by a sandbar at low tide, with some of the island’s best snorkelling. This is where to stay for quiet and local character without committing to the bumpy road to Thong Nai Pan.
- Budget: Bottle Beach Bungalows (for Bottle Beach, accessible only by boat or a steep jungle path, about 15 minutes from Chaloklum) has basic wooden huts from approximately ฿400–700 on one of the Gulf’s most secluded beaches.
- Mid-range: Koh Ma Resort & Spa in Chaloklum village runs approximately ฿1,800–3,200 with a pool and reliable songthaew connections.
Haad Salad and Haad Yao: the quiet west coast
Haad Salad and Haad Yao on the west coast are excellent beaches with calm water, good visibility for snorkelling, and a low-key atmosphere — popular with the yoga-retreat and digital-nomad crowd. Songthaews connect to Thong Sala in about 20 minutes.
- Budget/mid: Haad Yao Bay View Resort has rooms from approximately ฿900–1,800 right on the beach at Haad Yao.
- Mid-range: Salad Beach Resort on Haad Salad runs approximately ฿2,000–3,500 — good pool, beachfront position, quieter than anything on the south coast.
- Upper: Anantara Rasananda Koh Phangan Villas on Thong Nai Pan Noi (the island’s top luxury address) runs private-pool villas from approximately ฿12,000–22,000 as of 2026.
Getting to Koh Phangan
From Surat Thani: Seatran Discovery and Raja Ferry run regular crossings — approximately 2–3 hours, ฿300–600 depending on service. From Koh Samui: 30–45 minutes by catamaran, approximately ฿250–350. From Koh Tao: 1.5 hours south by high-speed ferry, approximately ฿300–400. The ferry pier at Thong Sala is in the island’s west-centre — most beaches are 15–40 minutes by songthaew from there.
Seasonal pricing
High season (December–April) and Full Moon Party weeks are the two pricing peaks. During a Full Moon Party — which falls on a different date each month — expect Haad Rin accommodation to cost 200–400% of normal rates, with a 3-night minimum widely enforced. Book Full Moon accommodation 2–3 months ahead. For the rest of the island in high season, 3–4 weeks ahead is usually sufficient. Low season (June–October) brings 30–50% discounts on most properties; September and October have the wettest weather. Frequently Asked Questions
- Where should I stay on Koh Phangan for the Full Moon Party?
- Haad Rin is the beach where the Full Moon Party takes place — staying here means you can walk back to your room. However, rooms in Haad Rin book out months ahead for Full Moon dates and prices triple or more. Staying elsewhere on the island means catching a boat taxi to Haad Rin on the night (approximately ฿200–300 return), which is how many experienced visitors prefer it — better sleep, cheaper room.
- Is Koh Phangan more than just the Full Moon Party?
- Yes, significantly. The north coast (Thong Nai Pan, Chaloklum) and west coast (Haad Salad, Haad Yao) have excellent beaches with almost none of the party atmosphere. The island has good snorkelling, yoga retreats, and a thriving digital-nomad community. Outside Full Moon Party week, Koh Phangan is surprisingly peaceful.
- How do I get to Koh Phangan?
- From Bangkok, fly or take an overnight train/bus to Surat Thani, then a high-speed catamaran or Raja Ferry to Koh Phangan — total journey 10–14 hours. From Koh Samui, a short ferry crossing takes about 30–45 minutes (approximately ฿250–350 as of 2026). From Koh Tao, the ferry south takes about 1.5 hours.
