Where to Stay on Koh Chang: Best Beaches and Hotels

Small jungle-covered islands in clear blue water viewed from Koh Chang, Trat Province, Thailand

Koh Chang is Thailand’s second-largest island and the anchor of the Mu Koh Chang National Marine Park. Its west coast is where nearly all the accommodation sits — a series of distinct beaches strung down a jungle-covered hillside, each with its own character. The island has resisted some of the overdevelopment that hit Koh Samui in the 2000s, so the rainforest interior is genuinely intact and the waterfalls are walkable from most hotels. Picking your beach is the most important decision.

White Sand Beach (Hat Sai Khao): the main strip

White Sand Beach is Koh Chang’s longest and most developed stretch — about 2 km of pale sand with resorts on the beachfront and a main road behind them lined with restaurants, tour operators, and convenience stores. It is the busiest and noisiest beach, particularly in December and January, but also the most convenient. The ferry from Laem Ngop arrives at the northern tip of the island, which puts White Sand Beach within 10 minutes of the pier — useful for late arrivals.

Where to stay on White Sand Beach:

  • Budget: Rock Sand Resort has fan bungalows from approximately ฿500–800 per night as of 2026 — simple beachfront rooms that are the best-value beds on this beach. Penny’s Resort runs approximately ฿700–1,100 for basic air-conditioned rooms.
  • Mid-range: KC Grande Resort & Spa, directly on the beach, runs approximately ฿2,500–4,000 with multiple pools and a decent spa. Sea View Resort, slightly further south, is typically ฿2,000–3,500 and has an infinity pool positioned well for the sunset.
  • Luxury: Centara Grand Beach Resort & Spa Koh Chang, the island’s most complete resort hotel, runs approximately ฿5,500–10,000 as of 2026. It has the largest pool complex on the island, multiple restaurants, a full-service spa, and private beach — the choice for families who want everything on-site.

Kai Bae Beach: the family and couples’ balance

Kai Bae, about 15 km south of the ferry port, is the middle ground: quieter than White Sand Beach, more accessible than Lonely Beach, with clear water, a good mix of resorts and guesthouses, and enough restaurants and beach bars to keep evenings interesting without the noise of the north.

  • Budget: Kai Bae Beach Bungalow has simple huts close to the sea from approximately ฿500–900.
  • Mid-range: Porn Bungalow, a long-running family-run resort, has wooden bungalows in garden settings from approximately ฿900–1,600. Starbeach Bungalow runs approximately ฿1,200–2,000 with beachfront positioning.
  • Upper: Panviman Resort, up on the hillside with panoramic sea views, runs approximately ฿3,500–5,500 — the best setting on this stretch, and quieter than anything at White Sand Beach.

Lonely Beach (Hat Tha Nam): budget and younger crowd

Lonely Beach, about 20 km from the ferry, is Koh Chang’s backpacker zone. The beach is small and not the island’s best, but the accommodation is cheapest here and the late-night bar scene is the island’s most concentrated. The town behind the beach has cheap food stalls, travel agencies, and a lively atmosphere that suits longer-stay budget travellers.

  • Budget: Nature Beach Resort has fan bungalows from approximately ฿350–600 — the classic Lonely Beach experience. Outside Resort, set in the trees behind the beach, runs approximately ฿400–700 and has more peaceful garden bungalows.
  • Mid-range: Treehouse Villas (further uphill, about 1 km from the beach) has elevated wooden villas from approximately ฿1,800–3,000 with jungle and sea views.

Bang Bao: stilted village, no beach, best sunsets

Bang Bao sits on a long wooden pier at the island’s southern tip. There is no proper swimming beach — boats depart from here to surrounding islands and snorkelling sites — but the overwater bungalows and guesthouses are uniquely atmospheric and the evening light on the bay is exceptional.

  • Mid-range: Cliff Cottage, on the headland above Bang Bao, has garden bungalows from approximately ฿1,500–2,500 with bay views. Nirvana, directly on the Bang Bao pier, offers overwater rooms from approximately ฿1,800–3,000 as of 2026.

Getting to Koh Chang

From Bangkok’s Ekkamai Eastern Bus Terminal, buses run to Trat approximately every 2 hours — journey time 5–6 hours, approximately ฿250–350. From Trat bus station, songthaews connect to Laem Ngop pier (30 minutes, ฿50–80). Car ferries from Laem Ngop cross to Koh Chang in about 30 minutes. For Koh Samui and the Gulf coast, it is a different route (via Surat Thani or Chumphon) — Koh Chang is on the eastern Gulf, facing Cambodia.

Seasonal tips

Koh Chang’s high season (November to April) is the east-coast dry season. The west season runs May to October — the island gets significant rain in September and October. Many resorts partially close in October. High-season rates at White Sand Beach resorts peak around Christmas–New Year (25–50% above average). Booking 4–8 weeks ahead for the December–January peak is advisable. Low season brings genuine bargains: ฿900–1,400 at resorts that cost ฿2,500 in December is common as of 2026.
