Where to Stay in Khao Sok: Floating Bungalows, Jungle Lodges & Ratchaprapa Dam

Khao Sok National Park is one of the oldest rainforests on earth - at 160 million years old, considerably older than the Amazon. The park covers 739 square kilometres of limestone karsts, primary jungle, and the vast Cheow Lan reservoir created in 1987 when the Ratchaprapa Dam was built. Accommodation here divides into two completely different experiences: jungle lodges near the park entrance village, and floating bungalows on the lake itself.

There is no luxury resort in Khao Sok. The nature is the draw; the accommodation serves it, not the other way around.

Cheow Lan Lake: floating bungalows

Cheow Lan Lake (also called Ratchaprapa Lake) is the centrepiece of Khao Sok and the reason most visitors come. A series of bamboo raft-house operations offer overnight stays on the water - you reach them by longtail boat from Ratchaprapa Dam pier, a 45-minute journey through increasingly dramatic karst scenery.

The bungalow operations are all broadly similar in concept: thatched bamboo rooms on floating platforms, shared or private bathrooms (the better operations offer ensuite), meals included, and guided options for kayaking, swimming, and wildlife spotting.

• Standard operations (฿1,200–2,000 per person, full board): Operations like Jai Dee Raft House, Smiley Lake House, and Pa Nok Raft House are owner-run Thai businesses offering simple rooms, local food, and organised dawn lake tours. Prices typically include dinner, breakfast, and a guided morning boat trip. Expect basic but functional conditions.
• Mid-range floating lodge (฿2,500–4,500 per person, full board): Art’s Riverside Jungle Lodge is the best-known operation that bridges between basic and comfortable - larger rooms, better food, slightly more organised guiding. Morning lake mist tours leave at 5:30 am. Their chef produces genuinely good Thai food.
• Better-equipped lake camps (฿4,500–7,000+ per person, full board): Elephant Hills Rainforest Camp is the most upmarket floating experience on the lake - private tents on pontoons, Western-standard meals, professional guiding. Packages typically run 2–3 nights inclusive and are booked through their website.

Note: electricity on the lake is typically from generators (evenings only or limited hours) and phone signal is absent or minimal. This is part of the point.

Khao Sok village: jungle lodges near the park entrance

Khao Sok village is a small strip of guesthouses, restaurants, and tour operators along Route 401. Staying here gives you easy park trail access in the mornings, good food options, and the flexibility to book lake trips as day or overnight excursions.

• Budget (฿400–900): Art’s Jungle Resort (no relation to Art’s Riverside) and Morning Mist Resort both offer fan or air-con bungalows in garden settings close to the Sok River for approximately ฿400–900 as of 2026. Clean, basic, and functional.
• Mid-range (฿1,000–2,500): Khao Sok Smiley Bungalow and Nung House offer slightly larger teak-wood bungalows with private bathrooms and better beds in the ฿1,000–2,000 range. Khao Sok Rainforest Resort at the higher end runs approximately ฿1,800–2,500 and has a small pool - one of the few in the village area.
• Upper end (฿3,000–6,000): Elephant Hills Tented Camp (the land-based sister to their lake operation) offers glamping-style tents with proper beds, hot showers, and a pool in the jungle. The most comfortable base if you want Khao Sok access with some creature comforts.

Food and practicalities

The village strip has several Thai-Western restaurants catering to trekkers. Our Lady Restaurant and Bamboo House Restaurant both serve solid Thai food for approximately ฿100–200 per dish. Budget for restaurant meals at approximately ฿300–500 per day for eating out. ATM access is available in the village but limited - bring cash.

Floating bungalows vs. jungle lodge: which to choose

This depends on your priorities. The floating bungalows are the reason Khao Sok appears on most travellers’ itineraries - if you can do only one thing, sleep on the lake. The jungle lodges make more sense if you want multiple days of hiking with trailhead access and easier resupply. A two-night combination - one night on the lake, one night in the village - gives you the best of both and is the most common itinerary.

Our verdict

For first-timers: book one night on the lake (Art’s Riverside for mid-range, Elephant Hills if budget permits) and one night in the village before or after. Cheow Lan Lake at dawn, with mist rising between 300-metre karst walls, is one of those experiences that justifies the whole trip to Thailand.
