Pattaya has a food scene that most visitors underestimate. The tourist restaurants along Beach Road and Walking Street are the visible face — mediocre Thai food at inflated prices — but the city has excellent local eating if you know where to look. Here is the practical guide.
Thepprasit Night Market: the best street food in Pattaya
Thepprasit Night Market on Thepprasit Road runs Friday and Saturday evenings from around 5pm to 11pm. This is a genuine local night market — 90% Thai visitors, street prices, real food.
What to eat:
Grilled seafood — Fresh crab, prawns, squid, and whole fish from stalls with live display tanks. A proper mixed seafood selection for two runs approximately ฿350–600. Higher quality and lower prices than any Beach Road seafood restaurant.
Pad kra pao — Stir-fried holy basil with minced pork or chicken, a fried egg on top. The definitive Thai working lunch. Approximately ฿70–90 per plate.
Kanom krok — Coconut milk pancakes in small round moulds. A sweet snack made fresh. ฿30–50 per portion.
Tom yum goong — Spicy prawn soup is done well by several stalls here — better than restaurant versions that go easy on the lemongrass and lime. A bowl runs approximately ฿80–120.
Fresh fruit smoothies — Available throughout the market. ฿40–60 per cup.
Budget approximately ฿150–300 for a proper market meal.
Jomtien: seafood and the quieter beach option
Jomtien Beach, 5km south of Pattaya Beach, has a seafood restaurant strip along Chaiyaphruek Road (running parallel to the beach, inland side) that serves Gulf seafood at better prices than the tourist-facing restaurants in central Pattaya.
Rim Talay Jomtien is one of the more established seafood restaurants in the area — an open-air restaurant overlooking the beach, good quality crab and prawn dishes, reasonable prices. Budget approximately ฿300–550 per person.
The seafood stalls at the north end of Jomtien Beach (near Soi 5) sell fresh fish and shellfish throughout the day — primarily for locals and long-stay visitors. Budget approximately ฿200–400 for a standing meal.
Soi Buakhao: where locals eat
Soi Buakhao (running north-south through mid-Pattaya, between Beach Road and Second Road) is where Pattaya’s resident expat and long-stay community eats. The soi and its side streets have dozens of Thai and international restaurants at local prices.
Nong Nuch Garden Café area and the restaurants around the Soi Buakhao/Soi Lengkee intersection do good Thai food — authentic preparations, local prices, the kind of place that doesn’t appear in tourist guides because it doesn’t need to advertise. Budget approximately ฿100–200 per person.
MK Restaurant (the chain version) on Second Road is a reliable option for Thai hot pot — not street food, but a well-run chain where you can eat well for ฿200–350 per person.
International and Korean options
Pattaya’s Russian, Korean, and European visitor base has produced genuinely good international options.
The Grill House and similar steakhouse-style restaurants on Soi 13/1 (near the north Pattaya intersection) serve consistent steaks at expat prices — budget approximately ฿350–600 per person.
The Korean restaurants on Pattaya 2nd Road and the sois running off it serve genuine Korean BBQ with all-you-can-eat options — popular with Korean visitors, well-priced. Budget approximately ฿350–500 per person for a full Korean BBQ meal.
Walking Street: for atmosphere, not the food
The Walking Street entertainment zone has a functional food scene running alongside its bars — satay and grilled meat vendors, a few Thai restaurants, and the occasional seafood stall.
PIC Kitchen near Walking Street is one of the better Thai restaurant options in the tourist core — consistent Thai food, good service, reasonable prices for the area. Budget approximately ฿250–450 per person.
The food stalls along Walking Street itself (grilled items, fresh fruit, Thai snacks) are fine for a walking snack — approximately ฿50–100 per item — but aren’t the best version of anything.
