Pattaya’s geography is straightforward: the main Pattaya Beach curves 4km from North Pattaya to South Pattaya, Walking Street is at the south end, and Jomtien is a separate beach 5km further south. Your experience of Pattaya depends heavily on which section you choose.
Central Pattaya: access to everything, loud at night
Central Pattaya Beach Road (between the North Pattaya Road and South Pattaya Road intersections) is where most hotels are concentrated and where Walking Street nightlife is walking distance. The beach itself faces east (not west — no sunset views from Pattaya Beach), and the water quality is less clean than Jomtien.
Best for: visitors whose itinerary includes Walking Street, those attending events or exhibitions at the convention centre, those who want to be near the shopping malls.
The tradeoff: Central Pattaya Beach Road is noisy until 2–3am on most nights. Hotels even a couple of blocks back from Beach Road are significantly quieter.
Price range: ฿800–1,500 budget, ฿2,000–4,000 mid-range, ฿4,500–9,000 upscale.
North Pattaya and Naklua: the upscale, calmer end
North of the North Pattaya Road intersection, the character changes. The resort hotels here (Pullman Pattaya Hotel G, Royal Cliff Beach Hotel) cater to business visitors and families rather than the nightlife crowd. Naklua, the next beach north, is more residential and even quieter.
Best for: families, business travellers attending the convention centre, visitors who want beach access without nightlife noise.
The tradeoff: North Pattaya still requires a baht bus or taxi to reach the sights at the south end. Naklua is far enough from central Pattaya to feel like a different destination.
Price range: ฿2,500–4,500 mid-range, ฿5,000–12,000 upscale at the Royal Cliff properties.
South Pattaya: resort seclusion
The Royal Cliff complex at the southern tip of Pattaya Bay occupies its own headland — six hotels in a self-contained resort village overlooking the bay. The position is genuinely spectacular and the facilities are the most comprehensive in Pattaya. The trade-off is that everything requires the resort shuttle or a taxi.
Best for: those who want the resort experience without proximity to the nightlife.
Price range: ฿3,500–8,000 at Royal Cliff properties.
Jomtien: cleaner beach, better for families and longer stays
Jomtien is separated from Pattaya Beach by a headland. The beach is cleaner, the water is clearer, and the atmosphere is significantly calmer. The accommodation is cheaper at comparable quality levels. The baht bus between Jomtien and Pattaya Beach Road runs regularly and costs ฿20–30 — the connection is easy.
Best for: families with children, couples who want beach relaxation over nightlife, longer stays (1+ weeks), visitors prioritising swimming and the seafood restaurant strip.
The tradeoff: the main shopping malls, Walking Street, and most entertainment is in Pattaya (15–20 minutes by baht bus). If the nightlife or the main shopping area is part of the plan, Jomtien adds transport inconvenience.
Price range: ฿700–1,300 budget, ฿1,800–3,500 mid-range, ฿3,500–7,000 beachfront resort.
Baht bus logistics
Pattaya’s baht bus system (songthaew trucks running fixed routes) connects North Pattaya, central Pattaya, Walking Street, and Jomtien for ฿20–30 per person. The circuit runs until midnight or later. For longer journeys (airport, Bangkok bus terminal), use Grab or arrange with the hotel.
