Ao Nang is Krabi’s main resort town — a 3km strip of hotels, restaurants, tour desks, and dive shops backed by karst cliffs. It functions primarily as a base for day trips: longtail boats to Railay Beach depart from the western end of the beach, and every island-hopping tour in the area launches from the Ao Nang beachfront pier.

The town itself is functional rather than beautiful. The beach is wide but the water is murky compared to Railay or the offshore islands. What Ao Nang offers is infrastructure — a real range of accommodation at every price point, consistent electricity and Wi-Fi, frequent songthaew connections to Krabi Town, and the easiest access to the boat network in the area.

Ao Nang Beach and the Seafront

The main beach runs roughly 1km from the boat pier at the western end to the point where the road meets the hillside at the eastern end. The western section — from the pier back towards the Ao Nang Princess resort — is the most active: longtail boats lined up on the sand, tour desks every 20 metres, food carts, and a promenade.

The central section has sunbeds and beach restaurants, calmer than the pier end. The eastern section near Nopparat Thara is much quieter — a longer beach backed by casuarina trees rather than hotels, with almost no vendors. The water here is slightly cleaner. Walk 15 minutes east from the main strip, or take a songthaew (THB 20–30).

The beach faces southwest, so sunsets from the pier end are good — particularly when the longtail boats are silhouetted against the light.

Restaurants

Ao Nang’s dining is a genuine mix of Thai cooking and tourist-facing Western and international food. The quality on the Thai side is generally good; the Italian and burger restaurants are variable.

Thai

Coconut Garden Restaurant (Ao Nang Road): One of the better Thai kitchens in town. Strong on southern Thai flavours — the massaman and the panaeng curry are both well made. The crab curry with coconut milk is a standout when fresh crab is available. Mains approximately THB 150–280 as of 2026. A/C inside, open tables at the front.

Krua Ao Nang (Ao Nang Beach Road, near the pier): Open-air beachside restaurant popular with Thais and regulars. The stir-fried morning glory and the pad krapao (basil chicken or pork) are reliable. Cheaper than the hotel restaurants — most mains THB 80–160 as of 2026. Busy at lunch.

Gecko Cabane (Ao Nang 3 Road): Slightly more upmarket, with a proper menu covering southern Thai recipes not always found on tourist menus — kaeng som (sour curry), kao yam (rice salad), khua kling (dry southern curry). Dinner for two with drinks approximately THB 600–900 as of 2026.

Seafood

Charcoal Tandoor and Fusion Grill (Ao Nang beachfront): Good grilled seafood — particularly the whole fish options. Also does tandoor dishes if you want a break from Thai food. Grilled sea bass from approximately THB 380, whole barramundi from THB 450 as of 2026.

Last Fisherman Bar (Nopparat Thara Beach road): Worth the short trip east. A casual bar-restaurant right on the beach with a daily changing seafood board depending on what came in. Cheaper than Ao Nang main strip — expect THB 200–350 for a full plate.

International and Café

Caffè Casa (Ao Nang 3 Road): Strong coffee — espresso-based drinks made properly, a rarity in this part of Krabi. Good for breakfast; the French toast with banana is popular. Open from 7am.

Bamboo Bar and Grill (Ao Nang beachfront): The best burger on the strip, if that’s what you need. Also does pizza and wraps. Mid-range prices (THB 250–400 for mains) and reliable Wi-Fi.

Nightlife

Ao Nang is not a party town. The nightlife is concentrated on Ao Nang 3 Road (the main strip running behind the beach) and the northern end of the beachfront promenade.

The Strip (Ao Nang 3 Road): A cluster of Thai-style open bars playing Thai pop and international hits. The most active section runs from the 7-Eleven junction north to the roundabout. Live music at several venues from 8pm. Last call is typically 1–2am. Fire shows on the beach most evenings in high season, best viewed from the beachfront bars.

Ao Nang Krabi Beach Club (beachfront): One of the few spots with a proper sound system. Outdoor seating on the sand, cocktails from THB 200–280, DJ sets Thursday–Sunday in high season. More relaxed than its name suggests — not a full club.

Encore Bar (Ao Nang 3 Road): Live music every night — covers, Thai pop, some original acts. Popular with longer-stay visitors. Opens around 7pm, gets going after 9pm.

Compared to Patong (Phuket) or Bangla Road, the Ao Nang nightlife winds down around 1am without the hard clubs or ladyboy shows. Families with children are as common as party groups.

Accommodation by Budget

Budget (under THB 1,500/night)

Ao Nang Backpacker Hostel: Dorms from approximately THB 350–500 per bed as of 2026. Clean, central, good common area. Popular with solo travellers. Private rooms available from THB 900.

Orchid Guesthouse (Ao Nang 3 Road): Fan rooms from approximately THB 700, A/C from THB 950. No frills, but clean and well-located — 5 minutes from the beach.

Ao Nang Buri Resort (budget wing): Fan bungalows at approximately THB 1,200–1,400, in a garden setting slightly back from the main strip. Quieter than street-facing guesthouses.

Mid-range (THB 1,500–4,000/night)

Krabi Tipa Resort: Well-positioned mid-range hotel with a pool, from approximately THB 2,200 as of 2026. The upper rooms have partial sea views. Breakfast available for THB 250–350 extra.

Aonang Villa Resort: One of the most established mid-range options on the strip. Pool, garden, and a good breakfast buffet. Standard rooms from approximately THB 2,800 as of 2026. Ask for garden-view rooms — the road-facing rooms get traffic noise.

Ruen Mai Kiri (on the hillside, eastern Ao Nang): A boutique-style property above the main beach strip. Jungle-facing rooms with strong air con and a quiet setting. From approximately THB 3,200 as of 2026.

Upmarket (THB 4,000+/night)

Centara Grand Beach Resort & Villas Krabi: The largest high-end property in Ao Nang. Private beach access, multiple pools, several restaurants. Rooms from approximately THB 5,500–8,000 as of 2026 depending on season and room type. The position at the eastern end of Nopparat Thara is the best in town.

Ao Nang Cliff Beach Resort (South): Perched on the headland south of the main strip, with pool villas and sea-facing rooms. Superior rooms from approximately THB 4,500 as of 2026. A step up in design from the strip hotels — more private, better views.

Dusit Thani Krabi Beach Resort: International chain quality, pool access to a quiet beach section, good service standards. Rooms from approximately THB 6,000–9,000 as of 2026.

Getting Around

Ao Nang to Railay Beach: Longtail from the western end of Ao Nang Beach — THB 100–150 per person, 15 minutes. Boats run from roughly 8am–6pm. See the Railay Beach guide for full details.

Ao Nang to Krabi Town: Songthaew (shared pickup truck) runs from near the Ao Nang Circle — THB 50–60 per person, 30–40 minutes. Runs 6am–6pm roughly. Private taxi: THB 200–350. Tuk-tuk (shorter trips only): THB 60–120 within Ao Nang.

Ao Nang to the Islands: All island-hopping tour operators have desks along Ao Nang beachfront. Longtails for Four Islands depart from the beach pier. Speedboat tours for Hong Islands and Phi Phi depart from Ao Nang Pier (slightly further east). See the Krabi island hopping guide for departure times and prices, or browse Krabi tours and day trips to book in advance.

Ao Nang to Krabi Airport: Airport taxis cost approximately THB 450–600 as of 2026, 30 minutes. Book through your guesthouse or flag down a metered taxi. Minivans from the Ao Nang tourist office: approximately THB 200 per person with a shared vehicle.

Within Ao Nang: Most of the main strip is walkable. Tuk-tuks handle the 2km to Nopparat Thara Beach (THB 60–80). Motorbike rental from approximately THB 300–400/day — useful for reaching Tiger Cave Temple (Wat Tham Suea, 25km) and the Krabi mangrove boardwalk.

Best Time to Visit

November to April is peak season. The Andaman dry season brings calm seas, reliable sunshine, and the full boat schedule to Railay and the islands. January and February are the most crowded and the most expensive months for accommodation.

May to October is the Andaman monsoon. Rain is intermittent rather than constant — mornings are often clear. The major impact is on boat access: longtails to Railay and island-hopping tours are cancelled when waves exceed 1–1.5 metres. In June and July, this can mean several consecutive days of tour cancellations. Accommodation prices are substantially lower (often 30–50% below high-season rates), and the crowds are a fraction of what November brings.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Ao Nang a good base for exploring Krabi?
Yes. Ao Nang is the main transport hub for Railay Beach (15-minute longtail), island-hopping tours (all operators depart from the beachfront), and Krabi Town (30 minutes by songthaew). It has a wider range of restaurants, guesthouses, and tour desks than Railay.
How far is Ao Nang from Krabi Town?
About 20km, 30–40 minutes by songthaew (shared pickup truck, THB 50–60 per person). Tuk-tuks and taxis do the same route for THB 200–400. Ao Nang has no ATMs charging low fees — Krabi Town has better banking options.
Does Ao Nang have a good beach?
Ao Nang Beach itself is pleasant but not exceptional by Krabi standards — the sand is grey-brown rather than white and the water is calm rather than clear. The appeal is convenience: longtail boats to Railay depart from the western end. Nopparat Thara Beach (2km east) is quieter with cleaner sand.
What is the nightlife like in Ao Nang?
Low-key compared to Phuket or Koh Samui. The strip along Ao Nang 3 Road has a dozen bars open until 1–2am, a couple of beach clubs, and regular fire shows on the beachfront. It's lively in high season but never raucous. Families and couples are the dominant visitor profile.
