Best Hotels in Koh Samui: By Beach and Budget
Choosing where to stay in Koh Samui
Koh Samui has five main beach areas with distinct characters. The choice of beach determines your experience — the island is large enough (230 sq km) that commuting between beach areas for each meal or activity is realistic but tiring. Choosing the right base matters more here than on smaller islands.
Chaweng — biggest selection, most energy
The longest and most developed beach on the island, 6km of white sand with a full strip of accommodation, restaurants, beach clubs, and nightlife. Every category is represented here.
Budget (฿500–1,500): Dozens of small guesthouses in the streets behind the beach road. Chaweng Budget Rooms and Jungle Club hostel (hilltop location, pool, views) are well-regarded in the backpacker tier.
Mid-range (฿2,000–5,000): Chaweng Cove Beach Resort (beachfront, pool, good value), Amari Koh Samui (larger resort property, direct beach access, consistent quality).
Luxury (฿8,000–25,000): Centara Grand Beach Resort Samui (flagship Centara property, beachfront, multiple pools). The Samui Beach Resort (smaller scale, better service-to-price ratio than the larger chains).
Lamai — quieter twin to Chaweng
The second-largest beach on the island, 4km long, with a similar structure to Chaweng but at lower density. The nightlife strip is smaller; the beach is less crowded on weekdays. A good choice for those who want Chaweng-style access without the full noise.
Mid-range (฿1,500–4,500): Lamai Wanta (beachfront, good rooms, reliable). Rocky Resort Koh Samui (at the southern end, rocky-point location with pools cut into the rocks).
Luxury (฿6,000–18,000): Pavilion Samui Villas and Resort (clifftop above Lamai, the most dramatic views on this coast). The Briza Beach Resort (direct beachfront, saltwater pool).
Bophut (Fisherman’s Village) — character and restaurants
The north-coast village of Bophut has the best restaurant concentration on the island and a preserved row of traditional Chinese shop-houses on the beachfront — the most atmospheric area to stay for those prioritising food and low-key character over beach activity.
The beach itself is narrow and not the island’s best for swimming, but the setting and the Friday Walking Street market compensate.
Mid-range (฿2,000–6,000): Zazen Boutique Resort and Spa (Thai-Balinese styling, excellent beachfront location, well-reviewed restaurant). Cactus Bungalows (basic but clean, very close to the village).
Luxury (฿8,000–20,000): Samui Buri Beach Resort. Le Charme Samui (intimate boutique, 15 rooms, strong service).
Mae Nam — the quiet north coast
Mae Nam is Koh Samui’s most low-key major beach — a 5km stretch with fewer hotels, fewer vendors, and a local-life feel that’s genuinely different from Chaweng and Lamai. Good for families and those wanting quiet mornings and affordable accommodation.
Budget (฿600–1,500): Mae Nam has the best concentration of budget guesthouses on the island. Coco Palm Resort (basic rooms, beachfront location, reliable). Moonhut Bungalows (very cheap, fan rooms, beach access).
Mid-range (฿2,000–5,000): Santiburi Koh Samui (older property but excellent beachfront with good gardens). Napasai by Orient Express (the luxury option on this coast — 69 villas in landscaped gardens).
Practical notes
- Advance booking: December to March requires booking 4–8 weeks ahead for mid-range and above.
- Room types: Bungalows near the beach are often better value than hotel rooms at the same price — newer plumbing and fewer shared walls.
- Transfers: Koh Samui Airport is in the northeast of the island. Grab operates from the airport. Budget ฿300–500 transfer to Chaweng, ฿400–600 to Bophut or Mae Nam.
- Ferry arrivals: Night ferry from Surat Thani docks at Nathon pier on the west coast. Songthaews from Nathon to all major beaches: ฿80–150.
