Best Hotels in Koh Phangan: Where to Stay by Beach
Where to stay in Koh Phangan
Koh Phangan is more accommodation-diverse than its Full Moon Party reputation suggests. The island has genuine quiet corners — deserted northern beaches, a yoga and wellness scene centred on Srithanu, and a laid-back west coast that most visitors skip.
Haad Rin — Full Moon Party zone
The southeastern peninsula of Koh Phangan is a narrow headland with a beach on each side. Haad Rin Nok (Sunrise Beach) is where the Full Moon Party takes place. The area is geared entirely toward the party crowd — cheap bungalows, beach bars, tattoo studios, and Muay Thai shows.
Budget (฿400–1,000): Palita Lodge (tight rooms, short walk to the party beach, the most recommended budget option in the area). Sea Breeze Bungalows (basic, cheap, walking distance to the beach).
Mid-range (฿1,500–4,000): Seaview Haad Rin Resort (on the calmer Haad Rin Nai / Sunset Beach, quieter nights, still walkable to the party). Tommy Resort (directly on Sunrise Beach, busy, functional).
Note: Full Moon Party week requires booking 4–8 weeks ahead. Prices double or triple; many properties impose minimum stays of 2–3 nights. If not attending the party, avoid Haad Rin during this period entirely — the noise is audible from all nearby accommodation.
Thong Sala — ferry town base
The main port and largest town, where all ferries arrive and depart. Practical but not scenic — the town beach is functional, not beautiful. A good base for those making day trips or needing ferry connections.
Budget (฿500–1,200): Several guesthouses on the road out of town. Thong Sala View has acceptable budget rooms with air conditioning.
Mid-range (฿1,500–3,500): The Sunset Garden Resort is 10 minutes from Thong Sala with sea views and better surroundings than town-centre options.
Haad Yao — best west coast beach
A 1.5km curved bay on the west coast with calm, clear water, good sunset views, and a self-contained stretch of restaurants and accommodation — enough for a week without going elsewhere. The best balance of beach quality, facilities, and quiet evenings on the island.
Budget (฿600–1,200): High Life Bungalows (beachfront, fan rooms, among the oldest operations on this beach — family run, reliable). Ibiza Bungalows (basic, cheap, beach access).
Mid-range (฿1,500–4,000): Haad Yao Bay View Resort (mid-sized property directly on the beach, consistent reviews, pool). Blue Mango Resort (boutique scale, 20 rooms, well-maintained).
Luxury (฿5,000–12,000): Tantawan Bungalow and Resort (a step up from mid-range without full resort pricing — good value in this category).
Srithanu — yoga and wellness
The west-coast village of Srithanu has become a centre for long-stay visitors and the wellness market. Yoga studios, vegan restaurants, community spaces. The beach is not the island’s best but the community atmosphere is distinct from anywhere else on Koh Phangan.
Mid-range (฿1,500–4,000): The Sanctuary (well-established retreat-style property with yoga, meditation, and spa — the most comprehensive wellness offering on the island). Vikasa Yoga Retreat (yoga-focused, packages available including classes).
Bottle Beach (Haad Khuat) — the quiet north
Accessible only by longtail boat from Chalok Lam pier (฿100–150 per person) or by a challenging hike. A small curved bay with crystal-clear water, limited accommodation, and no road access — the most isolated of the accessible beaches on Koh Phangan.
Budget/mid-range (฿500–2,000): Smile Bungalows, Bottle Beach 1 and 2 (similar basic-bungalow operations, fan rooms, basic restaurant). The isolation is the product, not the rooms.
Note: The longtail to Bottle Beach runs roughly 9am–5pm from Chalok Lam. Check return times before you go — being stranded is genuinely possible.
Practical notes
- Songthaew routes: Run between main beaches and Thong Sala throughout the day. ฿100–200 depending on distance. Night songthaews (during Full Moon Party periods) charge ฿300–500.
- Minimum stays: Many properties impose minimum 2–3 night stays on weekends and Full Moon Party week.
- Check-in with ferry arrivals: Most afternoon ferries arrive into rush-hour — have accommodation booked before arriving, or the taxi situation at Thong Sala pier is chaotic.
