Where to Stay on Koh Chang: Beach Bungalows to Resorts

Beachside bungalows on White Sand Beach, Koh Chang, with palm trees and calm Gulf waters

Koh Chang — Thailand’s second largest island

Koh Chang sits in Trat Province in the far southeast of Thailand, about 310km from Bangkok. It is Thailand’s second largest island (after Phuket) by land area, with most of the interior covered by forested national park. The main beaches are on the west coast, with development concentrated in a strip running roughly 20km from north to south.

The island is a weekend destination for Bangkok residents and a longer-stay base for independent travellers who want beaches without the crowds of Phuket or Samui. Getting here takes 5–6 hours from Bangkok, which filters out same-day day trippers.

White Sand Beach (Hat Sai Khao) — most developed

White Sand Beach is the widest, longest, and most developed beach on the island. The sand is fine, the water is calm during the dry season, and the beach road has the densest concentration of restaurants, bars, convenience stores, and tour operators. There are sunbeds and beach bars in the centre, with quieter stretches at the northern end.

The evening market at the south end of White Sand Beach is worth visiting — local food, clothes, and souvenirs at reasonable prices.

Budget options (฿600–900/night):

Siam Cottage — A collection of wooden bungalows set back from the beach with a garden. Fan-cooled rooms with private bathroom. Basic but clean. Around ฿600–800/night.

Penny’s Bungalows — One of the older budget operations on White Sand, with basic bungalows and a relaxed atmosphere. Fan rooms from around ฿700/night.

General budget guesthouses: The road running parallel to the beach (1–2 blocks back) has several simple guesthouses with fan rooms in the ฿600–900 range.

Mid-range (฿1,500–3,000/night):

Cookies Hotel — A well-maintained mid-range option on White Sand Beach with air-conditioned rooms, a pool, and direct beach access. Rooms from around ฿1,500–2,200/night depending on season. A reliable choice for the price.

Plaloma Cliff Resort — On the northern headland of White Sand Beach, with sea-view rooms and a pool. Quieter than the main beach strip. Around ฿1,800–3,000/night for a sea-view room.

Upscale (฿3,000–6,000+/night):

KC Grande Resort — One of the better-regarded upscale options on White Sand Beach, with a large pool, beachfront rooms, multiple restaurants, and spa facilities. Rooms start around ฿3,000–4,000/night in shoulder season. A full-service resort experience without the price tag of Phuket equivalents.

Amari Emerald Cove — Located slightly north of White Sand Beach at Khlong Phrao Beach. Polished resort with a large pool, spa, and beachfront setting. Higher-end service and facilities; rooms from around ฿4,500–7,000/night.

Lonely Beach (Hat Tha Nam) — backpacker scene

Lonely Beach is about 15km south of White Sand Beach on the same western coast. The beach itself is smaller and the water can be rougher than further north. The appeal is the scene: consistently the liveliest backpacker area on the island, with beach bars, late evenings, fire shows, and an informal social atmosphere.

Despite the name, it is not lonely — it is the second most populated beach during high season.

Treehouse Lodge — The most established budget operation on Lonely Beach, with a mixture of basic bungalows and tree-platform rooms set in the hillside above the beach. Atmospheric and popular with solo travellers. Budget rooms from around ฿500–700/night. Book ahead during peak season.

Nature Beach Resort — Basic fan bungalows directly on the beach at the quieter south end of Lonely Beach. Good value and beachfront. Around ฿600–900/night.

Who should stay at Lonely Beach: Those who want a social, informal atmosphere and don’t need polished facilities. Those who prioritise beach and comfort over nightlife should stay at White Sand Beach or Kai Bae.

Kai Bae Beach — the middle ground

Kai Bae is about 10km south of White Sand Beach, quieter and less developed but with a reasonable number of restaurants, dive shops, and guesthouses. The beach has good snorkelling just offshore. It attracts a mix of budget and mid-range travellers who want some peace without total isolation.

Sea View Resort and Spa — A mid-range resort with sea views, a pool, and comfortable air-conditioned rooms. Good value for the level. Around ฿1,400–2,500/night.

Kai Bae Hut Resort — Bungalows in a garden setting, ranging from budget fan rooms to mid-range air-conditioned options. Friendly management; good base for exploring the island. From ฿700 (fan) to ฿1,500 (air-con)/night.

Bang Bao — pier village and south coast

Bang Bao is a stilted fishing village at the island’s southern tip, built on a long wooden pier jutting into the sea. It is not a swimming beach — the pier serves as a hub for boat trips, dive operations, and snorkelling day trips to nearby islands. Several restaurants and guesthouses sit directly over the water.

Bang Bao Sea Hut — Rooms built over the water on the pier. An unusual and appealing setting. Around ฿1,200–2,000/night. Good for those who want to be close to the dive and boat trip operators.

If boat trips (to Koh Wai, Koh Khlum, and other small islands) are a priority, staying near Bang Bao or Kai Bae is convenient.

Rainy season (May–October)

The southwest monsoon affects Koh Chang from May through October. Rainfall is frequent, the sea can be rough and murky, and some smaller guesthouses close entirely. Ferry crossings to the island occasionally suspend in bad weather.

What changes during rainy season:

  • Prices drop 30–50% across all categories
  • Crowds drop significantly — the island feels genuinely quiet
  • Water visibility for snorkelling and diving is reduced
  • White Sand Beach surf can be rough; Kai Bae and Bang Bao are slightly more sheltered
  • Erawan-equivalent activities (waterfall hikes in the interior) are actually better with higher water flow

Low-season visits work well for those who don’t mind occasional rain, want lower prices, and are not focused on diving or clear-water snorkelling.

Getting around the island

Songthaews run a fixed route along the west coast road from the ferry pier to Bang Bao, passing all the main beaches. Flag one down on the road — ฿30–100 depending on distance. They run daylight hours only. Motorbike rental: ฿200–300/day from shops near all main beaches. The west coast road is sealed and manageable; the east coast road is rougher and less visited.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best beach to stay on Koh Chang?
White Sand Beach (Hat Sai Khao) is the most developed, with the widest choice of restaurants, bars, and facilities. It suits visitors who want convenience and evening options. Lonely Beach suits budget travellers and those who want a livelier backpacker scene. Kai Bae Beach offers a balance — quieter than White Sand Beach but with enough facilities to be comfortable.
When is the best time to visit Koh Chang?
November to April is the dry season and the best time to visit. The sea is calm and clear, and rainfall is minimal. May to October is the rainy season — some accommodation closes or reduces operations, and rough weather can affect boat crossings. Lower prices during the rainy season partly offset the weather risk.
How do you get to Koh Chang?
Take a bus or minivan from Bangkok to Trat (4–5 hours, ฿250–350 from Ekkamai or Mo Chit), then a shared songthaew to the Centerpoint or Ao Thammachat ferry pier (20–30 minutes), then the ferry to Koh Chang (30 minutes, ฿80 for vehicle and driver or ฿50 as a foot passenger). Total journey time from Bangkok: 5–6 hours. Minivan packages to the pier are available for around ฿350–450 all in.
