Where to Stay in Khon Kaen: City Centre, Lake District & University Area
Khon Kaen is Isaan’s largest city and the gateway to northeastern Thailand - a place where silk markets, dinosaur museums, and some of Thailand’s best grilled chicken (gai yang) coexist with a university city’s youthful energy. It is not on the typical tourist trail, which means hotel prices are lower than any other Thai city of similar size, and the experience is entirely unscripted.
City centre: Klang Mueang Road and transport links
The city centre clusters around Klang Mueang Road (the main commercial street), the bus terminal, and the train station to the south-east. Staying here gives the best access to transport, the Central Plaza shopping complex, and the morning markets. The lakeside is a 15-minute walk.

Bueng Kaen Nakhon: lakeside atmosphere
Bueng Kaen Nakhon is a large urban lake with a 4.5 km walking promenade, food stalls, pedal boats, and the island temple Phra That Kham Kaen connected by a footbridge. The lake area has the city’s most pleasant evening environment and is where Khon Kaen’s night-walk market operates on weekends.
- Budget: Several small guesthouses and serviced apartments on Ruamjit Road run from approximately ฿400–800. The area is popular with long-term local residents and visiting university families.
- Mid-range: Roma Hotel, near the lake’s east bank, runs approximately ฿1,000–1,600 for lake-view rooms - good value for the position.

It is not a typical tourist city but that is the point.
