Where to Stay on Koh Tao: Best Hotels and Dive Resorts

How accommodation on Koh Tao works

Koh Tao is a small island (21 sq km) with most development concentrated in three areas: Sairee Beach on the west coast, Mae Haad around the main pier, and Chalok Baan Kao on the south coast. There are a handful of smaller, quieter bays accessible by longtail or on foot.

The key question for most visitors is whether to book a dive resort package (accommodation + diving combined) or find accommodation separately and choose a dive school independently. Both approaches work — this guide covers both.

Sairee Beach — the main hub

Sairee is the longest beach on the island (around 1.5km) and the social centre. Most restaurants, bars, tour operators, and dive shops are here. The beach itself has coral sand, reasonable swimming, and a steady breeze. It gets crowded during Full Moon Party overflow from Koh Phangan.

Budget options (฿400–800/night):

Spicytao Backpackers — Dorms and private rooms near the centre of Sairee. A social hostel with a pool, good common areas, and a dive school partnership. Dorm beds from ฿400; private rooms from ฿600. Well-reviewed for solo travellers.

Bow Thong Guesthouse — Simple fan rooms in a garden setting behind the beach road. Basic but clean. Around ฿500–700/night for a private room.

General budget bungalows on Sairee: fan-cooled rooms with private bathroom run ฿450–700/night at multiple small guesthouses behind the beach strip.

Mid-range (฿1,200–2,500/night):

Koh Tao Cabana — One of the better-positioned hotels on Sairee, with a beachfront pool, air-conditioned rooms, and direct beach access. Rooms from around ฿1,500–2,500/night depending on season and room type. Good for those who want comfort without paying resort prices.

In Touch Resort — A step up from the standard Sairee mid-range. Pool, garden, reasonable rooms. Around ฿1,200–1,800/night.

Dive resort packages — what’s included and what to compare

The main dive schools on Sairee operate their own accommodation, often with all-inclusive packages covering:

  • Accommodation (typically fan or basic air-con room)
  • 3–4 days of the Open Water course (including all dives and certification)
  • Breakfast daily
  • Use of school facilities

Package prices vary but an Open Water course + basic accommodation for 4 nights runs ฿9,000–13,000 total, depending on the school and room type chosen.

Big Blue Resort — One of Koh Tao’s largest dive schools, with its own resort accommodation on Sairee. Open Water packages include room, all dives, equipment, and certification materials. Well-established with good instructor-to-student ratios. Their bungalows are basic but fine for a dive-focused trip.

Crystal Dive Resort — Another major school with on-site accommodation. Located slightly south of the Sairee centre. Known for thorough instruction and good dive site variety. Accommodation packages run ฿1,200–2,000/night with course included.

Ban’s Diving Resort — The island’s largest dive operation by volume. Has both budget dorms and private rooms, dive packages, a saltwater pool, and its own beach area. Good for solo travellers — the social scene at Ban’s is active.

What to check before booking a package: The price difference between established dive schools is relatively small. More useful to check: maximum student-to-instructor ratio (4:1 is the standard for Open Water; smaller is better), boat size, whether they include night dives in advanced courses, and what the room quality actually is (photos on the school’s site are often optimistic).

Mae Haad — best if arriving by ferry

Mae Haad is the main pier area and the commercial centre of the island. It has ATMs, pharmacies, a 7-Eleven, a small market, and tour operator offices. The beach at Mae Haad is not the best on the island — it’s functional but not a destination in itself.

Staying in Mae Haad suits people who want to be walking distance from everything practical, or those with an early or late ferry.

MaeHaad Bay Resort — The best positioned property here, with sea-view rooms and a restaurant. Around ฿1,500–2,500/night. Better-maintained than most Mae Haad options.

Most visitors use Mae Haad as a transit point rather than a base.

Chalok Baan Kao — quieter south coast

Chalok Baan Kao (also written Chalok Ban Kao) is a bay on the south coast with a calmer, shallower beach suitable for swimming and snorkelling from shore. The village is small — a handful of restaurants, a few dive shops, and considerably less nightlife than Sairee.

This suits visitors who want a quieter experience and don’t need the social centre of Sairee. The south coast dive sites (Shark Bay, Ao Leuk) are within easy reach.

Rocky Resort — A mid-range resort on the hillside above Chalok Baan Kao bay. Sea views, pool, air-conditioned rooms. Around ฿1,500–2,500/night. A reliable option for those wanting comfort in a quieter location.

Sunshine Bar Bungalows — Budget bungalows directly on the beach at Chalok Baan Kao. Fan-cooled, basic, right on the sand. Around ฿500–800/night. Good for those who want the beach without the noise.

Quieter bays — for those who want isolation

Several smaller bays on the north and east coast of Koh Tao are accessible only by longtail or on foot:

Tanote Bay — A small bay on the northeast coast with clear water and good snorkelling. A couple of guesthouses here; accommodation is basic and prices are slightly lower than Sairee. Longtail access or a hike over the hill.

Ao Leuk (Shark Bay) — Basic accommodation adjacent to one of the best snorkel spots on the island. If diving or snorkelling is the primary activity, staying here gives instant access to the sharks in the bay.

When to book

January–March (peak): Book accommodation and dive courses 2–3 weeks ahead at minimum. Popular schools fill their courses quickly during this period.

April–June (shoulder): Good weather, fewer visitors. A week’s notice is generally sufficient, though popular dive schools may still fill.

July–September: Decent conditions, manageable crowds. Booking a few days ahead is usually fine.

October–November: Northeast monsoon season. Diving may be cancelled on rough days. Some guesthouses offer reduced rates. Sairee can have rough surf. Worth checking dive school schedules before booking a course during this period.

Koh Tao has no luxury resorts in the conventional sense — the island’s infrastructure doesn’t support it. The highest-end accommodation is comfortable mid-range by mainland standards.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where is the best area to stay on Koh Tao?
Sairee Beach is the main hub — most restaurants, bars, and dive shops are here, and the beach is the longest on the island. Mae Haad is better if you're arriving by ferry and want easy access to the pier. Chalok Baan Kao suits those who want quieter surroundings and a calmer bay, with dive sites accessible from the south coast.
Should you book dive accommodation packages on Koh Tao?
Dive packages that include accommodation, meals, and diving (typically a 3–4 day Open Water course or a 5-dive Fun Diver package) offer good value if you plan to dive extensively. The package price is usually 10–15% lower than booking accommodation and diving separately. Compare a few schools before committing — the quality difference between established schools is small.
When should you book Koh Tao accommodation in advance?
January to March is peak season — the weather is best and the island is at maximum capacity. Book accommodation and dive courses 2–3 weeks ahead during this period. April to June is shoulder season with decent conditions and shorter booking lead times needed. October and November bring the northeast monsoon — some dive sites close on rough days and a few guesthouses reduce operations.
