Best Hotels in Koh Lanta: Where to Stay by Beach
Staying in Koh Lanta
Koh Lanta Yai’s beaches run down the 27km west coast, facing into the Andaman Sea sunset. The beach character changes significantly from north to south — the northern beaches (Klong Dao, Long Beach) have the most facilities and infrastructure; the southern beaches (Klong Nin, Kantiang Bay) are quieter with fewer services. Choosing a beach means choosing a pace of travel.
Most accommodation is open November to April only. The southwest monsoon (May–October) closes the majority of beachfront properties.
Klong Dao — family-friendly north coast
The widest and most developed beach on the island, 2km of gentle shelving sand suitable for swimming at all tides. The beach has the best family infrastructure — calm water, beach chairs, restaurants within walking distance, easy road access.
Mid-range (฿1,500–4,500): Lanta Pura Beach Resort (mid-sized, good beachfront position, pool). Klong Dao Beach Resort (consistent, reliable, direct beach access).
Luxury (฿6,000–18,000): Layana Resort and Spa (boutique adults-only, 57 rooms, well-regarded spa, direct beach access — one of the best mid-luxury properties in Koh Lanta).
Long Beach (Haad Phra Ae) — the main traveller strip
The longest beach on the island at 3.5km, with the widest range of accommodation and the best restaurant and bar strip. The combination of beach quality, infrastructure, and access makes this the most practical base for most visitors.
Budget (฿500–1,500): Bee Bee Bungalows (fan rooms in a garden setting, well-maintained, short walk to the beach). Sanctuary Bungalows (basic, cheap, directly on the beach).
Mid-range (฿1,500–4,500): Lanta Miami Beach (directly on Long Beach, consistent reviews, pool, reliable Wi-Fi). Long Beach Chalet (smaller operation, garden rooms, steps from the beach).
Luxury (฿5,000–15,000): Pimalai Resort and Spa (at the southern end of Long Beach — large grounds, multiple pools, regarded as the best hotel property on the island. The beach position and quality of service are significantly above anything else at this price point in Koh Lanta).
Klong Khong — budget and backpacker
A quieter beach between Long Beach and Klong Nin, known for its budget bungalows and the fire shows on the beach most nights during high season. A self-contained traveller community with minimal frills.
Budget (฿400–1,200): Chill Out (long-running, basic bungalows, beachfront). Time for Lime (slightly more polished, also runs a cooking school).
Klong Nin — the quiet mid-island choice
A narrow bay with clear water and a more subdued atmosphere than the northern beaches. The beach is less developed — fewer vendors, fewer restaurants, more space. Suited to those who want quiet days with some infrastructure.
Mid-range (฿2,000–5,500): Sri Lanta (boutique resort with good facilities, a short walk to the beach). Narima Bungalow Resort (directly on the beach, maintained bungalows, pool, sunset views).
Kantiang Bay — the south coast
A horseshoe bay 25km from Sala Dan in the south of the island. The beach is narrower than the northern options but the bay is beautiful and the isolation is real — 30 minutes from the main restaurant strip. The trade-off for the scenery is limited food and activity options.
Mid-range (฿2,000–6,000): Where Else? (small bungalow operation with a restaurant, the most recommended option in this bay for years). Ananda Resort Lanta (slightly more polished mid-range option in the bay).
Luxury (฿8,000–20,000): Phra Nang Lanta Beach Resort (the top-end option in Kantiang Bay).
Practical notes
- Sala Dan arrival: Ferries arrive at Sala Dan pier in the north. Songthaews from the pier to all beaches run during the day (฿100–200 depending on distance). At night, negotiate a fixed price with tuk-tuk drivers.
- Scooter hire: ฿200–300/day. The road runs the length of the island, paved throughout, gentle gradient. The best way to explore multiple beaches in a day.
- High season booking: January and February require 4–6 weeks advance notice for mid-range properties. Budget bungalows are generally walkable to on arrival outside of peak periods.
