Where to Stay in Nakhon Ratchasima (Korat): City Centre, Khao Yai Base & Best Areas

Nakhon Ratchasima - universally called Korat - is the largest city in Isaan and the fourth-largest in Thailand, with a population of around 150,000. It functions as the commercial and administrative capital of the northeast, which means it has the infrastructure (business hotels, good transport links, decent restaurants) of a proper regional city without the tourist inflation you find in Chiang Mai or Phuket.

It is a useful city to know - a transit point between Bangkok and the rest of Isaan, and the most practical base for day trips to Phimai and for those heading to Khao Yai National Park.

City centre: Ratchadamnoen Road and Thao Suranari area

The old city centre concentrates around the moat that encircles the historic town. The Thao Suranari Monument on Ratchadamnoen Road is the civic centrepiece, and the streets around it have the best concentration of restaurants, street food, and the Korat Night Bazaar (Thursday to Sunday evenings near the moat).

• Budget (฿400–900): Several small hotels around the city centre run basic air-con rooms at ฿400–900. Pho Thong Hotel on Jomsurangyat Road and Doctor’s Guesthouse near the moat both offer functional accommodation at the lower end of the scale. Thailand Hotel on Assadang Road is another long-running budget option near the Thao Suranari Monument.
• Mid-range (฿1,500–3,000): V-One Hotel (also styled V1 Hotel) on Mittraphap Road offers modern rooms, a rooftop pool, and a reliable breakfast at approximately ฿1,800–3,000 as of 2026. One of the better mid-range picks in the city. Sima Thani Hotel on Mittraphap Road is a well-established address with larger rooms and a pool, running approximately ฿2,000–3,500.
• Luxury (฿3,500–6,000): Pullman Khon Kaen Raja Orchid is in Khon Kaen, not Korat - Korat lacks a true five-star property. The highest category available is Dusit Princess Korat on Suranarai Road, running approximately ฿3,000–5,500 as of 2026 - international-standard rooms, pool, gym, and the most reliable service in the city.

Business district: Mittraphap Road corridor

Highway 2 (Mittraphap Road) is the main commercial artery, running north-south through the city. The area around the Central Plaza shopping mall and the area near Suranaree University of Technology (SUT, 15 km west of the city centre) attract business travellers.

• Mid-range (฿1,200–2,500): Grand Hotel Nakhon Ratchasima near Central Plaza, and Imperial Hotel on Chomphon Road, both run approximately ฿1,200–2,500 and cater primarily to Thai domestic business travellers. Consistent but not distinctive.
• Upper mid (฿2,500–4,500): Centara Hotel and Convention Centre Khon Kaen is - again - in Khon Kaen. In Korat, the best option in this tier is Korat Hotel (formerly SB Design Square) near the Mittraphap Road business strip, running approximately ฿2,500–4,000.

Base for Phimai Historical Park

Phimai Historical Park (55 km north-east of Korat) is one of the finest Khmer complexes in Thailand - a 11th–12th century temple city that predates Angkor Wat in its current form and shares the same architectural lineage. The town of Phimai has a few basic guesthouses (Old Phimai Guesthouse runs from approximately ฿500–900), but most visitors base in Korat and do Phimai as a half-day trip by bus or songthaew from the city’s Bua Yai Bus Terminal (about 1.5 hours, ฿50 each way as of 2026).

Food and night markets

Korat has a strong Isaan food culture and some specifically local dishes:

• Pad mee Korat: Stir-fried noodles with a distinctive local seasoning - Korat’s version of pad thai. Available at street stalls from approximately ฿60–100 as of 2026.
• Sai krok Isaan (Isaan fermented sausage): Sold from carts near the moat. Sharp, sour flavour distinct from northern Thai sausage.
• Night Bazaar near the moat: Thursday to Sunday from 5 pm, a good mix of street food, clothing, and local crafts.
• Korat Morning Market (Talat Klang): On Jomsurangyat Road, opens from 5 am. Best for northern Isaan snacks and grilled meats.

Our verdict

For most visitors, the city centre area near the Thao Suranari Monument makes the most sense - central, walkable, and closest to the main sights. V-One Hotel is the best value mid-range. Dusit Princess wins on reliability and comfort. The city rewards an evening of eating out and a morning at the monument; combine with a Phimai day trip and you have a solid two-night itinerary.
