What the Bangkok International Film Festival is

The Bangkok International Film Festival (BIFF) is Southeast Asia’s most significant film showcase, bringing together Thai cinema alongside productions from across Asia, Europe, and beyond. Following a long absence, the festival was relaunched in 2025 and has quickly re-established itself as a fixture on the regional film calendar.

Based on the 2025 and 2026 editions, BIFF 2027 is expected to run approximately two weeks in September. The 2026 edition ran 13 to 27 September, featuring 155 films and opening at ICONSIAM with Thailand’s Oscar submission. We will update this page when the 2027 programme and dates are officially confirmed.

What to expect at BIFF 2027

The festival’s programme is structured across several strands. The main competition features narrative features competing for the Golden Kinnaree Award. Separate sections cover documentary films and a short film competition open to filmmakers from across Asia. Out-of-competition screenings include retrospectives, restored classics, and special tributes to directors.

Screenings take place at Bangkok’s major central cinemas. Recent editions used Paragon Cineplex at Siam Paragon, SF World Cinema at centralWorld, and Doc Club & Friends at Samyan Mitrtown for independent and art-house programming. Specific venues for 2027 will be confirmed with the official programme.

Industry events — masterclasses, co-production forums, and Q&A sessions with directors — are scheduled through the festival, with many open to the public on registration.

Ticket prices for individual screenings typically run 100 to 200 THB. A selection of free community screenings takes place at accessible public venues. The full programme is usually published four to six weeks before the festival opens.

Practical advice for attending

Watch for the programme release. Popular screenings and director Q&As sell out fast. Sign up for the BIFF newsletter or check the official site regularly — the programme typically drops in late July or August for a September festival.

Getting between venues by public transport. The BTS Skytrain serves Siam Paragon (Siam station) and centralWorld (Chit Lom station) directly. Samyan Mitrtown is accessible from Samyan MRT. A stored-value Rabbit Card or MRT card makes hopping between venues straightforward and cheap.

September weather. September falls in Bangkok’s wet season — warm and humid with frequent afternoon and evening thunderstorms. Festival venues are heavily air-conditioned; a light layer is useful. Carry a compact umbrella or packable rain jacket for walking between locations.

Language. Thai films at BIFF are generally screened with English subtitles. International productions are shown in their original language with Thai subtitles; English subtitles depend on the individual print. Always check the programme entry before booking a non-Thai film.

Getting to Bangkok

Bangkok is Thailand’s main international gateway, served by Suvarnabhumi Airport (long-haul and regional carriers) and Don Mueang Airport (budget airlines). The Airport Rail Link from Suvarnabhumi reaches the central Phaya Thai station in around 30 minutes. See our Bangkok city guide for accommodation areas, neighbourhood guides, and getting around the city.
