Choosing where to stay in Bangkok

Bangkok is large enough that neighbourhood choice matters. The BTS Skytrain and MRT metro cover most tourist areas, but if you’re based somewhere without a station nearby, getting around will be slower and more expensive. The key question: are you prioritising access to temples (stay near Rattanakosin or Riverside), nightlife and shopping (Sukhumvit), or a local neighbourhood feel (Ari, Thonglor)?

Best areas to stay

Rattanakosin / Old Town

The tourist heart of Bangkok — walking distance of the Grand Palace, Wat Pho, and Wat Arun. Few luxury hotels in the area but excellent guesthouses and boutique hotels. Banglamphu (the Khao San Road area) is immediately north and has Bangkok’s highest concentration of budget accommodation. Getting to Sukhumvit or business areas from here requires planning — the BTS doesn’t reach this area directly (take the river ferry to Saphan Taksin, then BTS).

Budget pick — NapPark Hostel @ Khao San (฿350–600 dormitory, ฿900–1,400 private room). One of Bangkok’s best-run hostels with rooftop pool and bar.

Mid-range — Riva Surya Bangkok (฿2,500–4,500). Boutique riverside hotel, 5 minutes from the Grand Palace. Small pool, good breakfast.

Riverside (Silom and Sathorn)

The Chao Phraya hotel strip — where Bangkok’s most famous luxury hotels are. The Oriental (Mandarin Oriental), Peninsula, and Capella all sit on or near the river. The area is also adjacent to the Silom business district and accessible by BTS (Saphan Taksin) or river ferry. Evening dining along the river is excellent here.

Mid-range — Hotel Once Bangkok (฿2,800–5,500). Design-forward, walkable to BTS Chong Nonsi, good rooftop.

Luxury — Capella Bangkok (฿18,000–35,000). Riverside. Exceptional service and the most dramatic pool setting in the city.

Sukhumvit (Asok to Thonglor)

The most practical area for first-time visitors. BTS access throughout, enormous restaurant variety, proximity to Terminal 21 and EmQuartier malls, international pharmacy chains, and reliable taxi/Grab service. The downside: the area is generic and expensive by Bangkok standards.

Budget — Lub d Sukhumvit 4 (฿500–800 dormitory, ฿1,500–2,500 private). One of the best-designed hostels in Bangkok.

Mid-range — The Yard Hostel & Café (฿1,800–3,500). Boutique hotel atmosphere, 5 minutes from BTS Ari — slightly north of the main Sukhumvit strip but in a better neighbourhood.

Luxury — SO Sofitel Bangkok (฿5,500–12,000). Design hotel in Sathorn, Vertigo rooftop bar, outstanding service.

Ari and Phahon Yothin

A residential neighbourhood with good cafes, local markets, and a noticeably less touristy atmosphere. BTS Ari is 25 minutes from the airport by train. Recommended for travellers who have been to Bangkok before and want to base themselves somewhere more local. Fewer luxury options — mostly boutique guesthouses and serviced apartments.

Budget accommodation (under ฿1,000/night)

Bangkok’s budget guesthouse scene is well-developed. The best concentration is in Banglamphu (Khao San Road area) and around Silom. Hostels with pools and rooftop common areas have become the norm at this price point. Expect air conditioning, security lockers, and reliable wifi in any reputable budget option.

Mid-range (฿1,500–5,000/night)

The sweet spot in Bangkok. At ฿2,500–4,000 you can get a well-located boutique hotel with a pool, good breakfast, and reliable service. Bangkok’s mid-range is competitive — there are genuinely excellent options at this price that would cost three times as much in comparable Asian cities.

Luxury (฿6,000+/night)

The Mandarin Oriental Bangkok has been rated among the world’s best hotels for decades. The Peninsula Bangkok, the Capella, and Rosewood are the other names at this level. Prices rise sharply during December and peak season (Chinese New Year). Book 2–3 months in advance for these.

Practical tips

  • Book accommodation with free cancellation — Bangkok hotel prices fluctuate and you can often find better rates by rebooking closer to the date
  • BTS proximity matters more than area prestige — a ฿2,000 hotel 3 minutes from a station beats a ฿4,000 hotel requiring a taxi for every journey
  • Check Grab fares when the quoted taxi price seems high — the app gives a fixed price before booking

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best area to stay in Bangkok as a tourist?
Silom/Bangrak for easy BTS access, the river, and good restaurants without the Khao San chaos. Sukhumvit (lower sois, 1–21) for nightlife, international restaurants, and Skytrain convenience. The old town area for proximity to temples but limited accommodation and poor transport. Avoid staying near Don Mueang unless you have an early flight.
How much does a good hotel in Bangkok cost?
Budget guesthouses (Khao San area): ฿400–800/night. Mid-range hotel with pool (Silom, Sukhumvit): ฿2,000–5,000/night. Good boutique hotel: ฿4,000–9,000/night. International luxury (Mandarin Oriental, The Peninsula): ฿15,000–50,000+/night. Bangkok has exceptional value at mid-range — comparable quality costs 30–50% less than Singapore or Hong Kong.
